IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE STOVE-BACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,777, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 8, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BARKALOW, of New London, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Back, to prevent stoves from burning out at their backs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, and Fig. 3 a view of one of my detached sections.

The object of my invention is to prevent stove-backs from burning out; and consists of the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.

In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawings, A is a curved plate, made of any suitable length and height. Cast in the same piece with it, but shortened at each end, is a fiue or drum, B, about twice the thickness of the main plate A. At the center and on the upper edge of this drum is an opening, a, leading into the space within.

The result is, that a current of air constantly passes in at the ends of the rectangular drum,

and upward through the opening a, thereby cooling the parts of the back most injured by the combustion of the fuel.

When it is desired to extend the length of plate A to fit a particular stove, I use short sections C, which are grooved on their edges to fit over tongues b b on the ends of the main section.

I am aware thatheretoforehollow stove-backs have been used having a current of air or airpassage through them from end to end. I am also aware that false hacks for stoves have heretofore been made in sections, to accommodate them to different widths of grates or stoves; and hence I do not claim either of these features, broadly, my grate-back being construct ed so there is a current of air from each end toward the center; but,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-

The curved back-plate A, provided with the tongues b b, in combination with the drum B, provided with open ends and a central opening, a, substantially as set forth.
