This invention relates to attaching devices employing stringers having links adapted to be coupled and uncoupled and particularly to a coupling slide member movably disposed on said'stringers for coupling and uncoupling the same; and the object of the invention is to provide a member of the class specified with means for'movably supporting a finger piece in connection therewith and for engag ng said finger piece to retain the same against displacement when the slide member has been moved into predetermined position sume an angular position with reference" to the longitudinal plane of the slider; a further object being to provide the enlarged end of the slide member, having the diverging channels therein, with flared or enlarged opening to permit the free admission of the links on the separate stringers into the channels of the slide member without binding or without the exertion of undue pull on the slide member, especially in the operation of coupling the links of the separate stringers togetherand with these and other ob ects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, whicl1' is simple in construction, eflicient in use, and,
which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the. following sprecification, of which the accompanying awin forms a part, in which the separateparts o m inprovement are designated by suitable re erence characters'in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved coupling slide member and indicating the same mounted upon a portion of two stringers.

In the drawi 10 and 11 represents separated portions 0 an article of apparel or two tim bodies adapted to be coupled together. Mounted in connection with said parts are. flexible stringers 10 and ll" having links 10 and 11 adapted to be coupled and uncoupled by my improved coupling slide member 12 which is mounted upon the strin ers and movable longitudinally thereof. The particular type of stringers shown for illustrative purposes, are similar to those shown and described in my prior Patent No.
1,557,304, dated October 13, 19 25.
The coupling body 12, in the construction shown, is substantially V-shaped. in form when viewed in plan, and is provided with channels 13 and. 14, which join at the con tracted end 15 of said member and diverge at the enlarged end 16, the channelsbeing separated by a partition wall 17, which is tapered to the contracted end of said member and terminatesin ribs 18 on the inner faces of the side walls of said member, said ribs 18 extending to the contracted end 15, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. The channels 13 and 14 are substantially circular in cross sectional form, but where they open outwardly through the enlarged end 16 of the body, said channels are flared and considerably enlarged as seen at 19 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The channels also open outwardly through the side edges of the member 12 as seen at 20, and it is referred that the side .walls of they member e curved in the direction of the openings 20 as seen-at 21. The openings 20 permit of the passage of the bound portions of the stringers over the slide member as in other devices of this class.
In the present construction, the enlarged end 16 of'the member 12 is extended to form laterally directed wings 22 which are areshaped at the periphery thereof to form smooth rounded edges which will not in any way destroy thefabric to which the stringers are attached, or in connection with which the links of said stringers are coupled, and said wings extend well upon the bound or attached portions of the stringers and to such an extent as to prevent any possible detachment of the slide member 12, especially in its upwardly movement, when considering Fig. 1 of the drawing, refirdless of what position either or both of t stringers may assume. It is often e rienced in the practical use of devices of t e kind to which in invention relates that the separated ends of t e stringers will assume outwardly laterally and somedownwardly extending relations with I reference to the longitudinal plane of the slide member, as partially seen to the right of Fig. 1 of the drawing. In the use of narrow slide members, it was possible to detach the drawing, forming grooves or channels 24 at the opposite sides of said rib. The rib 23 eX- tends around the enlarged end 16- of the member 12 and the grooves 24 open outwardly at the opposite side of said member to permit of the attachment ofa' finger'piece 25 with said rib. After the finger piece has been attached,,the grooves 24 are closed by a member 26 which is forced inwardly as seen in Fig. 2. The other end of the rib 23 is closed and projects beyond the contracted end 15 of the member 12 in the form of a cam face 27, and said end of the rib is also provided with a projecting bar lock or finger 28.
The finger plece 25, which is made the subject matter of a companion application, is provided at its contracted end with inwardly directed. fingers or lugs 29 adapted "to be passed into the channels or grooves 24 of the rib 23 to permit of the movement ofthe finger piece 25 longitudinally of the slide member 12, and to retain the same in connection with said slide member, the enlarged end of the fin er piece having an aperture 30 to provide a fi rm grasp thereof between two fingers of a hand. Adjacent the lugs 29, the finger piece has an aperture 31 formed by upsetting the metal of said finger iece inwardly to form a lock member 32 havlng an inwardly curved blade edge 33 which is adapted to pass between adjacent links 10"-11 when coupled together. The lock member 32 is adapted to cooperatewith the cam face 27 of the slide member 12 to move said member into firm engagement with the links 10"1;;1 and to function as a wedge between said links and the cam face 27 to lock the slide member 12 against downward movement when it assumes a predetermined position of adjustment, or in other words to prevent seperation of the stringers. The lock bar 28 is adapted to engage the finger piece 25 adjacent the member 32 to retain said finger piece against accidental displacement, said bar operating in the aperture 31 of the finger piece as will be apparent. The operative po sition of the parts when in locked position 1s seenin Fig. of the drawing.
On a consideration of Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be noted that the inner adjacent faces of the laterally extending wings at the outer ends thereof, are flattened to a slight degree as seen at 34 to snugly fit upon the partslO and 11 inwardly of the links 10"11 in order to insure suflicient gripping or en'- gaging surface as to prevent the displacement of the slide member 12.
One of the distinctive features of my invention resides in the provision of a slide member having means thereon cooperating with a movable member or element, for example, the finger piece, to automatically lock and retain the slide member in predetermined positions of adjustment, the means referred to in the present disclosure, being the cam face 27 and the lock bar 28. It will be understood that the element or member cooperating therewith need not necessarily constitute a part of the finger piece ring employed for operating the slide member, nor am I necessarily limited to the specific construction of the slide member herein shown and described in its use upon stringers having links of the character illustrated, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A slide member of the class described comprising a body having diverging channels intersecting at one end of said body and diverging at the other end, said channels opening outwardly through the side edges of intersecting at one end of said body and di-- verging at the other end, said channels opening outwardly through the side edges of said body, and the end of said body where the channels intersect, being provided at one side face with a projecting cam, member arranged in juxtaposition to t e channels where they open out through said end of the body, and a channeled rib extending from said projection over one face of the body and around the opposite end of the body.

A slide member of comprising a body having diverging channels intersecting at one end of said body and diverging at the other end, said channels opening outwardly through the side edges of said body, and the end of said body where the chan nels intersect, being provided at one side face the class described comprising a body having diverging channels intersecting at one end of said body and diverging at the other 'end, said channels openino outwardly through the side edges of said body, and the end of said body where the channels intersect, being provided at one side face with a projecting cam'meniberarranged in juxtaposition to the channels where they open out through said end of the body, a channeled rib extending from said projection over ally extending wings.

A slide member of the class described comprising a body having diverging channels verging at the other end, said channels openin outwardly through the side edges of said bo y, and the end of said body where the channels intersect, being provided at one side face with a pro ecting cam member arran ed in juxtaposition to the channels where t ey open out through said end of the body, avchanneled rib extending from said projection over one face of the body and around the opposite end of the body, a lock bar integral with said rib and extending beyond said cam member, the other end of said body having laterally extending wings having straight adjacent faces at the outer ends thereof, and the channels of said body being enlarged at the last named end thereof.
7. A slide member for coupling and uncoupling the stringers of an attaching device of the class described, comprising a die cast body substantially V-shaped in form, said body having diverging channels intersecting at the contracted end of said body and opening outwardly through the opposite sides of the body and the enlarged end thereof, a partition wall subdividin the channels at the enlarged end of said he y, the enlarged end of said body having laterally extending wings adapted to extend onto that part of the stringers attached to predetermined supports, a rib integral with said body and extending longitudinally of one side face and around the enlarged end of said body, said rib having channels at the opposite side faces thereof, and said rib projectin beyond the contracted end of said body to orm a cam member between which and the coupled stringers a wedge member is adapted to be placed to secure the slider against movement on said stringers.
