ICE-RETAINING- CLIP.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ice retaining clips.

One object of the invention is to provide a clip which may be easily and quickly engaged about the edge of the running board of a motor vehicle to retain a block of ice in position and hold it against sliding off.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clip made of spring metal and capable of being applied and removed frequently without losing its resilient gripping qualities and which may be attached without the use of nails, screws or other auxiliary fastening means.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a retaining clip made from a single sheet of metal and having pointed impaling studs upset therefrom, as well as being provided with retaining bosses for increasing its holdon the running board.

A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, to gether with other features of the invention.

The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:

Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a portion of a motor vehicle running board with a clip constructed in accordance with my invention engaged thereon,

Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of said clip,

Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and

Fig. 4: is a similar view of a modified form.

In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a T-shaped metal body including a flat head 11 and an arm 12 extending from the center of one side of the head.

Near each end of the plate pointed impaling studs 13 are upset or stamped from the head. The arm is curved downwardly and bent upon itself to form a clamp loop. The free end of the arm is curved downwardly under the head to form a spring finger 1a. At the top of the curve of the finger a pair of spaced bosses 15 are upset so as to stand un der the head.

It is preferableto form the clip from a sheet of metal and bend it into shape. The

clip may be made from high grade spring steel and bent into shape, or it may be bent into shape and curvature, even though the finger 1 is sprung away from the head frequently. In using the clip it is slipped over the outer edge of the running board 16 when it is desired to carry a block of ice. .The head 11 and arm 12 will be fiat upon the top of the running board and the block of ice will be impaled upon the studs 18, thus being held against sliding.

The looped arm permits the head to be spaced inwardly from the edge of the running board, thus assuring that the studs will impale the block'of ice well within its margin so as not to split off the edge of the block.

The bosses 15 engaging the running board under the head provide a better fastening and resist displacement of the clip.

In Fig. 4 I have shown a clip designed for metal running boards 17 whereas in Fig. 3, the clip is attached to a wooden or thick board. When it is desired to remove the clip, it may be pulled from the running board.

Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations, may be made within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim, is:

1. A quickly attachable clip for retaining a block of ice on the running board of a motor vehicle, comprising a head having spaced impaling studs and an arm extending from the head and looped around upon itself to form an underlying clamp for engaging around and under the outer edge portion of. a running board, said loop being of relatively large size capable of accommodating running boards of varying thicknesses, the free end of the loop being normally disposed in close proximity to the head and having its extremity curved outwardly for facilitating the application of the clip on the running board, substantially as set forth.

2. A quickly attachable clip for retaining a block of ice on the running board of a motor vehicle, comprising a headhaving spaced im. paling studs and an arm extending from the head and looped around upon itself to form an underlying clamp for engaging ity curvedoutwardly for facilitating the application oft-he clip. on the running board,

and upstanding bosses adjacent the free end 10 of the loop for engaging the under side of the running board, substantiallyas set forth.
