TENT omen HARRY C. FRENCH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BOOKMARK.
Application fit-ca April 13, 1918.
To all whom z'tmag concern Be it known that I, HARRY C. Franzorr, a citizen otthe 'United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Bookmarks, of which the following is a full, clear, and c7;- act description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to book-marks and ms for its object to provide a mark which is extremely simple expensive of production, which can be conveniently applied to and removed froz-n a book and without liability of injuring or marring the same, and one which, when so applied, will remain in place. I secure the foregoing results in and through the con struction illustrated in the drawings forining a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a book showing my mark in operative relation thereto; F ig. 2 a sectional view through said book and showing the mark in elevation; and F ig. 3 a sectional view of the mark.
In these drawings, 1 represents a book, and 2 the mark as a whole. This mark is preferably formed of spring wire and comprises a branch 3, a transverse branch 4, and an inclined branch 5 having at the end thereof a loop 6. The branch 3 is longer than the branch 5, preferably about twice as long as the same, and is curved toward its free end. For convenience of description, it will be assumed that the mark is applied to the upper end of a book, and the terms top, bottom, upper and lower will be employed as a of description but without limiting the use of my mark to any particular position.
The wire from which the mark is construct ed will preferably be bent so that the lower end of the branch 3 thereof will tend to stand away from the bottom of the crotch formed between two adjacent leaves of a book. This may be accomplished by curving the branch 3 as a whole, or by bending the I same toward the lower end or from about the central portion thereof. The branch l extends substantially at right Specification of Letters Patent.

branch 3, while the branch 5 is bent inrardly so that the bottom thereof will tend to contact, and preferably will contact with the branch 3 before the mark is applied to a book.
In applying the mark to a book such as shown herein, the operator takes hold of the mark by means of the loop 6, inserts the branch 3 into the crotch, pulling outwardly on the loop to enable the latter to clear the back of the book. The mark may'thus be inserted so that'only the branches 4 and 5 will appear, and it will be retained in place by means of the spring; en 'agement between the bottom of the branch 0 and the middle portion of the branch 3. When it is desired to remove the mark, it is necessary only to grasp the loop 6, and to pull outward and upward upon the same. This enables the mark to be slipped easily and conveniently from the book, By deflecting the lower end of the branch 3, this end of the wire is prevented from digging into or scratching the leaves during the operation of inserting and removing the mark. mark is particularly well adapted for insertion into the crotch between the leaves of a book and with the loop 6 bearing against the back thereof, it will be evident that it may be applied to the side or bottom of a book, if desired.
It will be evident that the book-mark disclosed herein is extremely simple and economical of production, but that it is nevertheless both eliicient in and convenient of operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A book mark formed from spring wire and provided with a lateral portion and two branches extending therefrom, one of said branches being substantially shorter than the other or" said branches, said short branch terminating in a handle portion, said branches being converged to the end of said short branch, and said long branch being diverged from this point to the end thereof. In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my signature.
HARRY C. FRENCH.
