This invention relates to burglar alarms and more particularly to a burglar alarm adapted to be applied to a door or a win: dow which may be set to firea blank cartridge when the door or window is opened.
The general object of my invention is to' provide a burglar alarm of the character stated which will be simple in construction, inexpensive and cfiicient in operation.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter and while I show herewith and will describe a preferred form of construction, I desire it to be understood that I do not confine my invention to such preferred formv but that various changes and adaptations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter claimed.

My invention includes generally a base 1, a barrel 2, firing pin 3, trigger 4, firing pinspring 5, trigger clip 6, trigger holding arm '4', and locking pin 8.

The clip 6 isformedwith a base member 13 and an offset member 1a, which basemen'r. her is secured to the upper end of the base 1 by screws 15 so that the-triggert may pass under said ofi'set member '6 when the firing pin 3 and trigger are retracted. n The offset member 1a? is provided with anaperture 16 which registers with an opening 17 in the base 1 through which apertures and open ing the locking pin 8 is introduced under the trigger 4 to lock thetrigger and firing pin 3 retracted in inoperative position as shown in Figs. The trigger holding arm '7, is formed at one end with a screw 18 while its other end 19 is bent downwardly.
The spring 5 is connected-at one end to one of the screws 9 at the lower end. of the barrel 2 while the other end of the spring is connected to the trigger t at 20. f
When my invention is applied o a door 21, the base 1 is secured to the inside of the door adjacent the swinging edge thereof, while the trigger holding arm 7 is secured to the door jamb adjacent the base 1, so that the trigger 4c may rest upon said arm to hold the firing pin retracted while the door is closed.
The barrel 2 near its lower end is cut away in front to provide an entrance 22 through which a blank cartridge may be inserted into the lower end of the barrel with the rim 2% of the cartridge resting-5;; upon the lower edge of the entrance 22, whereby the cartridge is held in posit-ion in the barrel to be fired. I When the device is not in use the firing pin 3 may be raised and the locking pin 8 inserted through the aperture 16 and opening 17 under the trigger 4 to hold the firing pin retracted as shown in Figs. i and 5 so that the door or window sash. may be opened and closed without firing the cartridge. To set the device for operation the locking pin 8 is removed from under the triggers and the trigger allowed to rest upon the hold ing arm 7 when the door is closed as shown in Fig. 6. Upon opening thedoor slightly the trigger will escape from the holding arm 7 (Figs. 7 and and the trigger andfiring pin 3 will be projected downwardly, with considerable force by the spring 5, whereupon the point 24; oi the firing pin engaging the head of the cartridge will fire the same, the noise of which will give warning of a burglar entering the door.
The device is applied to a window by securing the base 1 to the upper side of the upper frame member of the lower sash and securing the holding arm 7, by means of its screw 18, in the upper side of the lower frame member of the upper sash in position to be engaged b the trigger 4 to hold the firing pin 3 retracted while the sash are closed (Fig. Upon raising the lower sash or lowering the upper sash, the trigger 4 will escape the arm 7 and the firing pin 3 will be projected by the spring 5 to fire the cartridge as above described.
I claim as my invention:
A burglar alarm, adapted to be applied to a door or window comprising means for holding a cartridge, a firing pin, a trigger on said firing pin, a spring connected to said firing pin, a barrel to support and guide said firing pin, an arm for engaging said trigger to holdsaid firing pin retracted when the door or window is closed and from which arm said trigger escapes when the door or win- CHARLES F.
