This invention relates to indexes or files of the class in which record members are arranged upon a frame or other carrying member in overlapped relation. More particularly the invention relates to a novel form of record member for use in such indexes, slidingly and detachably mounted upon a suitable guide and adapted to lie flatwise thereon under normal conditions, with a margin exposed to view below an overlapping similar member, the body portion of the same being covered.

In indexes of this type, it is desirable that the data upon the body of the record member be easily uncovered by manipulating the overlying card in order to observe the same or to make additions thereto or changes therein. It is also desirable to be able to remove a record member from the index and to insert another in place thereof. It is also desirable in such indexes to be able to insert additional cards adjacent ones already filed, upon which additional data in continuation of the data upon the adjacent card may be recorded when the adjacent card becomes filled. It is also desirable, in some instances, to change an index from the so-called box file into a visible index of the type under consideration, and therefore, indexes of this type should be provided with convenient means whereby this change may be easily and economically made.

The principal object of this invention is to provide in indexes or files or similar device, an improved record member having a base portion adapted to be detachab-ly mounted upon a carrying member and which is capable of detachably supporting a ward or other record-bearing member or a plurality of such members.

Another object of this invention to provide in such indexes, suitable means for removably receiving and retaining record cards upon a guide in such a manner that additional cards may be added to, replacements made in, or cards taken from the index, without interfering with or disturbing the location of the cards already in place.

Other objects of this invention are to proide a record card holder adapted to receive Fig. 1 illustrates a panel or leaf carrying record members embodyin my invention;

An adjustable card support or stop 25 may be employed by which the cards are retained upon the upper portion of the leaf 20. The a-rticular form of the card support or stop 25 forms the subject matter of a co-pending application Serial No. 669,523, filed October 19, 1923, and is of interest here only as showing a suitable means to, support the record members on the leaf in the position shown.

My improved record member or card 22 consists of a supporting or base portion 26, wherein are located the die cut ears or tongues23, and a pair of record bearing portions 27 and 28 in the nature of sheets or flaps. The base portion 26 is provided with a pair of hinge pintles 29 and 30, secured to an edge 31 of the same by clips 32. Each pintle projects beyond the clip 32 at each side thereof outwardly in respect thereto, as at 33, and. inwardly as at 34-. and is secured to said clip against displacement relatively thereto by suitable securing means, such as insetting or staking the clip material as at 35.

The clip 32 comprises a strip of material folded back upon itself in such a manner as to form a pintle support or bearing portion 36, which is adapted to encircle the pintle.

The ends of this strip are then extended outwardly as at 3'7, being spacedapart sufficiently to embrace the edge 31 of the base portion 26. One of the ends is provided with pointed ears 38 which passthrough the material of the record member base, and by being bent forwardly over the edge of the end of the clip lying upon the reverse side of the card, the clip is secured on the card. Similar clips 82 are secured to an edge of each of the record bearing portions 27 and 28. One of the record bearing portions underlies the other portion, 27 in this case, being shown as the underlying one. The clips secured upon the underlying record bearing portion 27 are preferably located to be engaged by the outwardly extending pintle portions 33, and when only one record bearing portion is to be used, this is the preferred location for the clips 32. The overlying record bearing portion 28 has the clips 32 secured thereto in proper position to be engaged by the inwardly extending pintle portions 3st. The convenience of the above arrangement will be explained later.

By the use of a number of base portions 26 and a supply of clips 32, the cards of a box index, wherein the cards are filed one in back of the other, may be adapted for use in an overlapping visible margined card index of the type illustrated. In such cases, the clips 32 are secured to an edge of each of the cards, preferably located so that they will be engaged by the outwardly extending pintle portions lVhen necessary or desirable, additional cards may be added adjacent these original ones by securing other clips to the additional cards, locating the clips thereon in proper position to engage the inwardly ex tending pintle portions 3%. The cards to be added may then be placed either above or beneath the original ones. When the device is to be used as above described to change one form of index to another, it is contemplated to furnish the user with the desired number of base portions having hinge pintles 29 and 30 properly secured thereto, and a plurality of card clips 32 in the form shown in Fig. 11. The clips in this case are open between the extending portions 37 to allow for the insertion of a card therebetween, after which the portions 37 are pressed together, by which action the card is pierced by the ears 38, which are then bent back over the other end portion 37, which lies onthe reverse side of the card.

It is to be noted that when two record hearing portions or cards are mounted upon a base portion, as described above, the overlying card may be swung upwardly and away from the lower card and will lie substantially flat against the frame or the adjacent cards without the disadvantage usually present in hinged cards formed by creasing the card itself to form a hinged portion. This feature facilitates posting or reference and is one of the advantages contemplated by this invention.

In order to secure a card or record bearing portion 27 to the base portion 26, it neces sary tofiex or buckle the base portion 26, as shown in Fig. 9, so that the pintle portions 33 may be engaged in bearing portions 36 of the clips 32. After being so assembled, the record member so formed may be secured upon the guide 21 by engaging the ears 2% under the flanges 24. When the record member is so engaged upon the guide 21, it is obvious that the record bearing portion 2? is locked upon the base portion 26, andis not detachable thereit'rom without first removing the base portion 26 from the guide 21. The card or record bearing portion 28 may be secured to or detached from the base portion 26 by flexing or buckling the record bearing member 28 to engage the bearing portions 36 of the clips 32- with the inner pintle portions S-Zi. It is obvious. therefore, that the record bearing portion 28 is attachable and detachable at will and may be secured to the base portion either in front of or in back of the record bearing portion 27.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 12. the base portion 39 of the record member provided with clips 40 similar in construction to the clips 32 the clips 46 in this instance, presenting oppositely directed bearing portions instead of pintle portions. The cards 41 and ill) 42 are provided with clips 43 having a pintle portion 44: extending outward from one side thereof. The clips &3 are similar for both cards but are secured to the cards so that the pintle portions 44: extend in opposite direc tions at each end.

lVhile I have shown and described my improved record member as being preferably used with a frame and card retaining guide of particular design, I do not limit myself to the specific use therewith, as such a record member is obviously capable of advantageous use with other types of card carrying de vices. Neither do I limit myself to a record member in which a record bearing portion, when engaged by outwardly extending pintle portions mounted upon a base, is locked against removal therefrom, for under some conditions, it may be advisable or convenient to cause the locking of the record bearing portion engaged by the inwardly extending pintle portion. It is desi able, however, that at least one of the same be locked in position upon the base portion, in order to insure that the record members of the entire index be retained in proper sequence when in use.

WVhile I have illustrated and described preterred forms of record members, embodying the features of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is not limited to the exact details shown, as modifications and variations are possible which will lie within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

1. In an index or file, a record bearing base member provided with means to detachably support a plurality of record bearing members, said means comprising in combination, hinge pintles extending outwardly in opposite directions, and inwardly opposed hinge pintles.

2. In an index or file, a record bearing base member having means thereon for supportin; a pair of record bearing members, comprising a pair of pintles, said pintles presenting outwardly extending portions in opposite directions and inwardly opposed portions.

In an index or tile, a record bearing base member having means thereon for supporting a pair of record bearing members, comprising a pair ot' pintlcs, said pintlespresenting outwardly extending portions in opposite directions and in *ardly ogposed portions, and a pair of record carrying members hinged to said pairs of pintles, respectively.
