UNITED STATES HARRY D. MITCHELL, F HERMOSA BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
BRUSH.
Application filed June 21,
My invention relates primarily to clothes brushes and tooth brushes and the object thereof is to produce a brush in which the bristles may be folded when the brush is not in use, so that the brush will occupy less space in a traveling bag or in the pocket than is occupied by brushes of ordinary construction.
In the drawings forming a part of this application Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover case for my clothes brush with a portion of the brush projecting therefrom. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central sectional. view of a part of Fig. 1 at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1. is an enlarged side elevation 0f the brush, a part of the frame being cut away and the case omitted. Fig. d is a vertical cross section on the line 4&4 of Fig. 3 with the bristles in operative position. Fig. 5 is al view of the parts shown in Fig. 5 with the bristles in inoperative position. Fig. 6 is a top plan of one end of the brush showing the parts in operative position. 7 is a like view to Fig. 6 showing the parts in inoperative position.
Referring to the drawings 10 is a case into which my clothes brush is slid when not in use. My clothes brush consists of a rectangular frame 11 in which the bristle members are rockably mounted. The bristle members consist of a plurality of heads 12 preferably of metal in which bristles 13 are mounted in any suitable manner. Heads 12 are rockably mounted in frame 11 by trunnions 14 and on one side at the top are angular to the vertical plane that extends through the trunnions when the bristles are vertical. A positioning strip of sheetvmetal 15 extends longitudinally and centrally in frame 11 and is rockablv mounted therein by trunnions 16 and 17 which are in a plane that passes over heads 12 when said heads are in their inoperative position as shown in Figs. 2 and 7. At-one 1927. Serial No. 200,373.
side strip 15 is provided with notches one side of which is at right angles to one of the edges thereof and the other side of the notch is angular to the first mentioned side of the notch, thereby forming teeth 15a. Trunnion 16 exterior the frame has a knurled head 18 by means of which the strip may be rocked when the bristles are in their inoperative or closed position and longitudinal with the frame as shown in Figs. 2*5 and 7. Strip 15 lies on the top of said heads and holds them in their closed position. When the brush is to be used the user rocks strip 15 thereby causing teeth 15a to project between the heads of the bristle members which causes the rotation of the bristles to a position at right angles to the frame as shown in Figs. 3-4 and 6 and holds them in their position of use. The brush can then be used as a clothes brush.
Having described my invention I claim:
A brush comprising a rectangular frame having trunnion openings in the sides and position member openings in the ends thereof: a plurality of bristle members transversely and rockably mounted in the side openings of said frame. said bristle members comprising heads having trunnions at the ends thereof and bristles therein, said heads having one side at the top angular to the vertical plane of the other side, and a positioning member rockably mounted in the opening in the ends of said frame, said positioning member being notched in one edge, said notches having one edge at right angles to the line of the notched edge, and the other edge of the notch angular to the first edge, said positioning members extending longitudinally in the frame above the bristle heads.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th day of .I une, 1927.
HARRY D. MITCHELL.
