IMPROVEMENT lN WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 70,024., dated November 16, 1875; application filed September 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. SEABURY, of St. James, Suffolk county, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for a covering for the wire used in wire fences, by which a wire fence may be made cheaper, owing to the fact that a lighter grade of wire or wire of less weight is used. The covering also serves to prevent the wire from injury by rust, or being out by accident or otherwise, and serves likewise to prevent injuryto animals or persons. The coverings, when properly drawn up close to each other, also form shoulders or supports against the posts, thus keeping these posts in their original position.
My invention consists in making the covers for the wire of pieces of wood in sections. Each piece is made of a certain length, cylindrical, or of any other desired form, with a circular stem in one end projecting from the center. The other end is cut off straight, having a hole or socket bored into its center, into which hole fits the circular stem of another cover. A longitudinal cut is made with a saw in each piece, reaching from the outer side into the center of the piece. In one of the posts, where the wire penetrates the same, is, bored a hole, in the inner side, to correspond with the projecting stem of another cover. One of the covers is then placed over the wire, with the stem fitting into the hole in the post. The
next cover is likewise placed over the wire, the projecting stem of the same fitting into the 1101c in the end of the last-mentioned cover. In like manner the whole wire is covered by placing cover after cover, by aid of the slots, over the wire.
In order to prevent the covers from being disengaged from the wire, it is only required to turn each in a different direction and draw the posts close up to the covers.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim The covers D, with stems e, sockets f, and longitudinal slot 9, in combination with the wire 0 and posts A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
