lvly invention relates to mattresses and more particularly to a casing or envelope therefor hzwing` removable flaps and com`- bined tufting and separable fastening devices for connecting the cover tothe mattress body and for holding said envelope closed.

By the use of the combined tufting and separable fastening devices the envelope may be very quickly and easily opened. for the purpose of cleaning the cover of the casing or envelope as well as the body of the mattress, and While said envelope is opened, said body may beaired and exposed to the rays of the sun for sanitary reasons and to permit the expansion of said body.

To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter ydescribed and delined in the claims. i

rlhe numeral 5 indicates the body of a mattress formed from cotton felt'or any other suitable material and having an envelope 6 of ticking or any other suitable material. The

envelope 6 includes a bottom member 7, a cover 8,. end members 9, side members 101and top marginal end and side flanges 9 and 10, respectively, said end members 9 and side members 10 being attached to the bottom member 7 and the flanges 9 and 10', respectively, at 11, either by imperial edges or side stitches. The cover 8 comprises end triangular flaps 12 and side triangular flaps 13 de tachably secured, respectively, to the flanges 9 and 10 by separable fasteners 12. The free marginal edge portions of the flaps 13 overlap the corresponding edge portions of tbe end flaps 12., The pointed end portions of the end flaps 12 overlap one another as shown in 1. Formed in the bottom ment ber 7 and cover 3 are a multiplicity of vertically aligned Worked button holes 14. Similar button holes 15 are formed in aligned pairs in the overlapped edge portions of the flaps 12 and 13 and aligned with certain of the button holes 1st in the bottom member 7. Button holes 16, like the button holes 14 and 15, are formed in aligned pairs in the overlapped pointed end portions of the endflaps 12 and are aligned With certain of the button holes 111 in the bottom member 7 Combined tufting and separable fastening devices are provided for securing the envelope 6 to the mattress body 5 and also for connecting the flaps 12 and 13, and each of said devices comprises a cord 17, a pair of elongated buttons` 18, having aligned pairs of

eyes

19 and 20, through which said cord is inserte-d. It will be noted that the eyes 19 are at the longitudinal centers of the buttons 18 and that the eyes 20 are longitudinally offset therefrom. The cord 17 is inserted through the eyes 19 from the inner faces of the buttons 18 and then returned through the eyes 2O and the end portions of the cord 17 are tied to form loops 21. It is, of course,

understood that one of the buttons 18 may be applied to the cord 17 as above stated before the cord is inserted through the mattress body 5. The tying of the last loop 21 determines thelength of the cord 17 bet-Ween the buttons 18 and, hence, the amountthe mattress body 5 is held compressed by the cord 17 and buttons18.

Before the buttons 18 are applied to the cord 17, said cord is inserted transversely through the mattress body 5, by means of a needle or otherwise, at the centers of the aligned holes 14,- 15 and 1G, then through the eyes 19, returned through the eyes 20 and tied as'above stated. i i y To turn back the iiaps 12 and 13, the top buttons 18 are turned on end, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2, and inserted. through the respective button holes 141 to release the flaps 12 and 13 from each other andfrom the mattress body 5. i

The combined tufting and 'fastening devices inserted through the holes 14, 15 and 16 securely hold the envelope 6 on the 1nattress body 5 tufted and also connect the overlapped end portions of the flaps 12 and 13. The combined tufting and separable fastening devices inserted through the button holes y 16 connect the pointed end. portions of the flaps 12 and securely hold the same from spreading. It is, ofcourse, understood that by drawing on one or both of the loops Q1, the cords 17 between the buttons 18 may be shortened to further compress and tuft the mattress body 5.

The separable fasteners 12 permit the flaps 12 and 13 to be independently detached from the flanges 9 and 10', respectively, for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the same.

Wh at I claim is z 1. The combination with a mattress, of an envelope for the mattress, the cover of which comprises flaps, the adjacent free edge portions of which overlap, the one with the other, the ends of. said iiaps being overlapped at the center of the mattress, in combination with separable fasteners; connecting the` fiaps at their overlapped edge portions and ends and attaching the saine to the mattress, means permanently attaching the main body of `the envelope to themattress and means detachably securing the :[laps to the main body.

2. The combination with a mattress, of an envelope for the mattress, the cover of which comprises triangular side and end flaps, the

adjacent free edge portions of which overlap, the one with the other, in combination with separable fasteners `connecting the overlapped edge portions of said :flaps and attaching the cover to the mattress, means permanently attaching the main body of the envelope to the mattress and means detachably securing the flaps to the main body.

A mattress envelope, the cover of Which comprises triangular side and end flaps, the adjacent free edge portions of which overlap, the one with the other, said end iaps at their point-ed end portions also being overlapped, the one with the other, in combination with separable fasteners connecting the side and end flaps at their overlapped edges and the end flaps at their overlapped end portions, means permanently attaching the main body of the envelope to the mattress and means Adetachably securing the liaps to the main body.

A mattress envelope having in its cover., button holes, in combination with combined tufting and separable fastening devices, each` of said devices comprising a. cord attached v to tliebottom member of the envelope at a point vertically aligned with one of said button holes and an elongated but-ton on said cord and adapted to be inserted through the vertically aligned button hole in said cover.

5. A mattress envelope having in its cover, button holes, in combination With combined tufting and separable fastening devices, each of said devices comprising a cord attached to the bottom member of the envelope and an elongated button having a pair of eyes through which said cord is inserted for adjustably securing the button to the cord, said button being adapted to be inserted through one of said button holes.

6. The structru'e defined in claim in which the end portions of said cord, outward of its buttons, are tied to form loops.

7. A mattress envelope having in its top and bottom members, aligned button holes, in combination with combined tufting and separable fastening devices, each of which comprises a cord and a pair of elongated buttons having pairs of eyes through which the cord is inserted, the buttons of each oi said devices being adapted to be inserted through any one pair of said aligned holes.

8. The structure defined in claim 7 in which the end portions of eachcord, outward of the buttons thereon, are tied to form loops.

9. A mattress envelope, the cover of which comprises triangular side and end flaps, the adjacent free edge portions of which overlap the one With the other, said envelope having in its bottom and cover aligned button holes, in combination with combined tufting and separable fastening devices, each of which comprises a cord and a pair of elongated buttons having pairs of eyes through which said cord extends, said buttons being adapted to be inserted through any one of said aligned button holes.

1Q. The structure defined in claim 9 in Which certain. of the button holes in the cover are arranged in aligned pairs in the overlapped edgeportions of said flap.

11. The structure defined in claim i) in which the pointed end portions of the end flaps overlap, the one with the other, and in which certain of the button holes are arranged in aligned pairs in the overlapped edge portion of said flaps and in the overlapped end portion of the end flaps.
