PLASTERERS FLOAT.
Application :tiled November 25, 1927. Serial No. 235,540.
My invention relates to improvements in plasterers iloats. l
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel plasterers float, of the type provided with a exible pad, with novel means by which a worn pad may be quickly removed and replaced by a new one.
A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means by which the pad is stretched and held tightly clamped along its edge portions.
A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for properly registering the pad upon its being mounted on the float.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the kind described, which is simple, cheap, durable, not liable to get out of order, which is emcient in operation and which permits of the quick and easy insertion into or` removal from of the pad with respect to the pad holding members.
A further object of my invention is the provision of two clamping members so arranged with respect to each other that a pad clamped therebetween will extend acrossthe inner member and below the lower edges of of the outer member.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a top view of my improved float, with the parts shown in the operative position.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on theline 2-2 of lFig. l.
3 is a stretchout View of the pad.
Fig; 4 is a plan view of the trame and clamping member hinged thereto, the latter beingl shown in the open position.
Fig. 5 is a reduced side elevation of my i mproved float.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views. l
My improved ioatcomprises two clamping members l and 2, the latter being movable to and from a clamping position in the member l, and in the latter position being adapted to clamp the edge portions of a flexible pad 3 against the inner walls of the outer member. l
ln the preferred embodiment of my ini/enA tion 'the outer clamping member l comprises a rectangular frame open at the top and bottom and the member`2 comprises a flat plate 2 having upwardly extending side flanges l and end flanges 5, Figs. 1 and 2.
One of the flanges et has attached to it two hinges 6 which are also attached to one side of the frame l, in a manner such that the clamping member 2 may be swung from the open position, shown in Fig. t, to the closed a handle 7, with which the float may be held during its operation, and also for forcing the pad within the frame l.
The pad 3 is of greater area than the frame l, the inner walls of which are spaced from the adjacent edges of the clamping member 2, when the latter is in the clamping position. p p p Each end of the frame 1 is provided with an inwardly extendingprojection 8 which is adapted to'` engage the pad 3 to hold the latter from slipping after its insertion in the frame 1.
@ne edge of the pad 3 is provided with two notches 9 which are adapted to receive the hinges 6, and which are so disposed so as to properly register the pad with the frame l.
In mounting the pad on the float clamping members l and 2, the pad is laid over the top of the frame l with the hinges 6 in the recesses or notches 9. The member 2 is then swung by means of the handle 7 into the frame l, thus forcing the pad 3 into said frame with the edge portions of the pad extendingupwardly and held tightly clampedbetween the clamping member 2 and the inner walls of the frame l. This operation stretches the pad 3 lengthwise and crosswise across andV bearing against the bottom of the plate 2, with the bottom of the pad projecting below the bottom edges of the frame l, which en# ables the float to be tipped, in its use, without the frame `l contacting with the material operated upon by the pad 3;
`'lo releasably hold the clamping member 2 in the clamping` position, any suitable means may be employed, such as a screw i0, which is removably extended through a transverse hele 11, Fig. 2 :in the adjacent side of the frame 1, and through a transverse hole l2 in the adjacent upturned portion of the pad 3, said screw being removably fitted in a threaded hole extending transversely through the adjacent flange 4.
`When it is desired to replace a worn pad with a fresh one, the screw 10 is removed, and the clamping member 2 then swung, by means of the handle 7, to the open position shown in Fig. 4, thereby releasing the pad 3, upon which it may be replaced, in the manner already described, by another pad, after which the screw 10 is reinserted through the holes 11 and 12 and in the threaded hole in the adjacent flange 4.
By Vhaving the pad` 3 bearing directly against the bottom of the clamping plate 2, the frame l may comprise simply a metal strip formed into a rectangle and having its end portions united, as shown.
By hinging the members l and 2 to each other, said members are always `retained in their propercooperative relationship to each other and to the pad 3, when the latter is being inserted, they are not liable to individual loss one from the other, and it enables the locking device 10 to be easily and quickly operated to connect the members.
I do not limit myinvention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is o 1. A plasterers float comprising a holding frame open at the top and bottom, a clamping member hinged thereto so as to be swung to and from a clamping position within said frame, and a flexible pad of greater area than the area enclosed by said frame and adapted to be extended across said frame and to be forced thereinto by and to bear against the bottom of said clamping member and to have its edge portions extended upwardly through the bottom of said frame and tightly clamped by and between the edges of said clamping member and the inner walls of said frame.
