AWNING.
` Application filed December 19, 1927.
rthis invention relates tonew and useful improvements in awnings tor Window openingsaud the like, and the object of the invention to provide an awning; which will be simple to manufacture, easy to erect in position1 and easily adjusted to suit the size ot' Window openings.
Another object is to provide a collapsible awningl which will allow atali times free passage oi' air through the openingl to which it fitted.
A further object is to provide an awning which will be easily adjusted to suit Weather conditions, or raised to clear the opening required.
i(.cording1 to my invention l provide a channel of boi; shaped section with slotted `guides which may be secured to the side trames ot a Window, door, or the like. Slid ably mountedv in the guides are the curtain supports which euch consist et a bent bar,
ivotelly mounted on a horizontally disposed liar, the ends ot which are provided with means to position the horizontal bar between the guides. Both bars of each curtain support are provided Wit-h means to allow adjustments to be `made to suit the width ot the window openings. Tie bars are pro vided between each horizontal bar and the bent bei', to hold them a predetermined distance apart, so that the curtain which is imide oi? duch or such like 'flexible material may be stretched therebetween. The ties hold the curtains in such a manner that the lower curtains may be raised and partially covered by the curtain immediately above it when the awning' is in the closed position when not in use. titiening means are provided for the lowermost curtain to hold it in shape, while supportingthe curtains above it, and means areprovided for holding the curtain sect-ions a predetermined distance apart. Means are also provided :tor suspending the curtains and tor raising or lowering,-
the awning. y

Figure 6 a perspective plan ot the guide member at the top thereof.
iteterrinil more particularly to the d avvingm. jl'lA designates the side `iframes, l2, the lintel? and 13 the sill et a window. Secured to the sideft'rames by any suitable means are the guides ifi which are preferably of square tubular cross section, each having a slotl5 formed in one side. rifhe slot extends from` one end 16 of each of the trames to a point in close proximity to the other end 16a. Also formed in the guides at the ends 1G*vb are the holding slots i7 which are/spaced fronrthe ends i8 ofthe slots l5, Resting in the slots i7 and extending` between the guides is the luirirmntally disposed curtain supporting rod i8. Suitable guide Washers '19 are secured to the rod in proximity to its ends to hold the rod in theg'uides. Four rods 20 similar to the rod 18 are mounted in the slots l5. Each oit said rodslits into a'sleeve 2l and is made in two sectionsso that the rod `may be quickly adjusted to suit the dis- `tance between the guides. Hingedly attached 'to the rods E20 are the curtain torming members 22, which are mede ot fiat bars 23 made in the ttorm oi three sides of a rectangle. 'ihe members 22 are each mede in .two sections joined together by the bolts or rivets Qi. One of the sections is provided with a plurality of rivet holes to allow the members to be adjusted to suit the distance between the guides. i Ertendingbetween the upper rod i8 and the forming members in proximity thereto, are` the tying` members, or member 25, which hold the curtain in shape. Similar tying members 26 are provided between the rods and the forming member immediately bel-ovv them, and between the lowermost rod and the lovvermost framing or forming member 2i'. The member 2T is of similar construction to the members 22, butfis hingedly attached to `spacer or stilening` members 2S` hingedly attached at one end tothe lowermost rod and at the other end slidably mounted in theguides,
the last mentioned ends being recessed to tit into the guides. Each oi2 the tying members is made of tiet bars, the ends of'ivhich pass through slots formed in the rods and the forming members in proximity thereto, The curtains 29, which arepreierably made ot duch, are stretched between the forming members and the rods immediately above Cil them, and the ends are brought into close proximity to the guides to prevent the glare of the sun from entering through the opening which the awning is covering when in the open position. Tensioning chains or such like fiexible members 33 are provided between the horizontal rods to hold them a predetermined distance apart when the awning is :in the open position, and such members may be covered by forming pockets 34 in the side portions Vofi the curtains. A double pulley block 3l, or a single pulley block 3l, mounted on the window frame in roximity to the upper end of' each guide, an( ropes 32 may be reaved therethrough and attached to the bottom rod 20, so that when the ropes are pulled, the curtains are pulled towards the top ot the` frame. One of said ropes may be passed through the double pulley block and joined to the other rope, so that the device may be controlled from one side of the window frame.
In erecting the device, thc rods Q0 are .placed in the guide slots and the rod 18 is kept clear of the guides, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 5. The rods are then pushed upwardlyT in the guides and the rod 1S is slipped into the slots in the upper end thereof. A locking pawl 36 is provided to hold the upper rod in position. By pulling on the ropes, the curtain may be raisedv to clear the window opening with the lowermost portion of the curtain holding the upper portions in shape. As will be seen the device is simple in construction and easily erected and provides a device which will keep the glare of the sun from entering through the opening without interfering with the air space. The pawls 35 keep the upper rod from being pulled out of place by the up` ward movement of the curtain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an awning structure, guides secured to the side frames of a window, said guides having each a recess formed at thetop and a slot formed in the bottom, said slot extending upwardly to a point in proximity to the top of the guides, a top curtain rod rest. ing in said recesses and extending between the guides, curtain supporting rods slidably mounted in the slots, iiexible means connecting the rods together to hold them inspaced relationship, and means to pull the rods towardslthe top of the guides.
2. In an awning structure, guide members secured to the side frames of a window, said members each comprising a square tubular member having. a recess at the top in one side thereof, and a slot extending from the bottom on the same side to a point in proximity to the'recess, a curtain supporting rod extending between the guides and resting on the recesses, and curtain rods flexibly attached to one another and slidably mounted in the slots.
3. In an awning structure, guide members secured to the side frames of an opening, said members each comprising a square tubular member having a recess formed in one side at the top of the member and a slot in the same side extending from the` bottoni to a point in proximity to the top, and adjust able curtain supporting rod extending between `the guides-and resting in the recesses in the guides, a plurality oi adjustable curtain support-ing rods slidably mounted in the slots, metallic exible tying means between said rods and means for raising the rods towards the top of the frame.
t. In an awning structure, guide mem bers secured to the side frames of a window opening, said members comprising tubular members each having a recess at the top thereof', and a slot extending from the bottom to a point in proximity to the recess, and an adjustable rod resting in the recesses, means for holding the top rod in the recess, adjustable rods slidably mounted in the slots and connected together, and to the top rod by fiexible tying members, adjustable curtain forming members pivotally secured to the rods in proximity to the guides, and curtains between the forming members and the rods immediately below them, and covering the flexible tying members and stifiening members for holding in shape the bottom curtain.
5. In an awninfy structure, guide members secured to the side frames of a window opening, said members comprising tubular members each having a recess at the top and a slot extending from the bottom to a point in proximity to the recess at the top, an adjustable awning supporting rod extending between the guides and resting in the recesses, pawl means to hold the top rod in position in the recess, a plurality of' adjustable curtain rods slidably mounted in the slots and flexibly suspended on chains from the upper rod, adjustable curtain itorming members pivotally secured to each of the lower-rods, flexible tying members between each of the curtain ormingmembers and the rods immediately above them,` means to raise the lower rods in the guides, and curtains between the horizontal bars and the curtain forming members immediately be low them, said curtain having side pockets adapted to cover the tying members between the horizontal rod and stiffening members between the bottom rods.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
