Specification of Letters Patent.

Original application filed March 16,1903, Serial No. 147,932. Divided and this application filed July 8,1903, Serial No. 164,660.

'To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLARD (J. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and removable partition device adapted to be set up in any apartment or room to set olf any desired portion of said room or -to be taken down and condensed into a small compass.

A further object of my invention is to provide a partition device of this nature havinga plurality of sides.

Another object of my invention isto provide for adjustment, both as to extent and' angular direction, of the sides of the partition.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the Figure I is a perspective view of the partition device. Fig. II is an elevation with parts broken out and the remaining parts brought into approximation. Fig. III is a detail section of an extensible rod-coupling for adjusting the position of the partition. Fig. IV is a plan of the partition device in closed position. wall-casing for the partition device. Fig. VI is a similar'view of the partition device removed from the wall-casing. Fig. VII is a plan of the partition device as applied in the wall-casing.

The bottom of post 8 is held from slipping on the floor by a crows foot or claws or projections 27 on its lower end. A shield or flap 28 is desirably attached to the intermediate post or member 8, so as to-cover the opening or joint between the curtains 7 and 11.

The several lugs or lateral extensions 5 and 9 may be formed on identical or interchangeable members having central hubs or bosses 30, perforated to engage over or around the posts 2 or 8, as the case may be, and also having the eye means 3 formed therein, as well as the eyes or holes 22, for engagement of the rods 21. thus suffice for all the attaching parts.

As shown in Figs. V to VII, the main supporting-post 102 may be formed as a part of a wall-casing, said post being, for example, oneof the side casings of a doorway 11%) and being hinged to the door-frame 101 by hinges 30, which permit of its being lifted bodily ofi", the casing at the top being cut away somewhat, as shown at 31, to allow of this vertical movement. A recess 32 is formed in the door-frame back of casing-post 102 and is adapted to receive the rollers 6 l0 and curtains 7 11 therein, which rollers and curtains are supported by post 102, as above described. When the casing-post 102 is closed, as indicated at dotted lines 102 in Fig. VII, it conceals the curtains and appears like any other door-casing; but when it is desired to use the partition said casing is swung into open position, as shown in full lines in Fig. VII, and the curtain device is then pulled out and fastened in desired position by attachment and connection to the walls of the room, as above described. In case it is desired to use the partition device in other locations or rooms Y than that adjacent to or containing the recess the casing-post is lifted off and carried to 'such other point and hung upon pins or hooks 104 there provided, as shown in dotted lines at 102 in Fig. VII, said pins or books being attached to the wall casing of the room or rooms at any desired number of points, according to the positions at which the device will be required.

A single pattern of casting will What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

1. A partition device for rooms, comprising a pivotally-mounted roller, a curtain winding thereon, a second roller pivotally connected to said curtain, a supplementary curtain winding on said second roller, and hooked rods pivotally connected with the said second roller to enable thelatter to be held in fixed position.

2. A'partition device for rooms, COII'IDIiSlHg a pivotally-mounted roller, a curtain winding thereon, a second roller pivotally connected to said curtain, a supplementary curtain winding on said second roller, and adjustably-extcnsible attaching-rods pivotally connected with the said second roller to enable the latter to be held in fixed position.

3. A hinged post, acasing formed with a recess back of said post, and adapted to be closed by said post, and apartition device comprising roller-and-curtain means supported on said post.

4. A detachably hinged post, a casing formed with a recess back of said post, and adapted to be closed by said post, and a partition device comprising roller-and-curtain means supported on said post.

5. A detachablyhinged post, a casing formed with a recess back of said post, and adapted to be closed by said post, a partition device comprising roller-and-curtain means supported on said post, and fastening means located in fixed position at difiierent points for attachment of said curtain means.

6. A detachably -hinged post, a casing formed with a recess back of said post, and adapted to be closed by said post, a partition device comprising roller-andcurtain means supported on said post, and means for detachably supportingsaid post at other fixed point or points.
