PATENT oFFIc ANDREAS ELLINGSEN SORIA, OF GJ' ERIEN `NEAR SKIEN, NORWAY.
'WASHING INI LEMENEIL Application Med AprilY 11, 1927, Serial No. 182,671,`and in Norway April 26, 1926. i
My invention relates to washing implements, and it is the object of the invention to provide an implement by means of which tlicwash may be easily caught, held and handled in such manner that the operator does not need to touch the liquid or the wet wash itself with his hands.
Another object is to provide a simple implement which may be used inthe manner indicated above when the wash is to be taken out of a tub; when it is rinsed and when it is wrought to expel liquid, such as rinsing liquid, therefrom.
The annexed drawing illustrates by way of example two embodiments of my invention.
Fig. l is a side view of one embodiment of the implement when closed and Fig. 2 is a similar side view thereof when opened.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line IIL-III of Figure 1 and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line IV-IV of Figure 1, and
Fig. 5 is a side view of other and preferred 25 embodiment placed in operative position for wringing operation on a washing or rinsing tub.
Referring to Figs. 1-4 the implement is in the form of two elongated members 1 and 2 3o interconnected at or near one end in such manner that the two members may be relatively swung to move the free ends of the members more or less away from each other (Fig. 2) in order to grip the washing between f such ends.
In the drawing the said members are shown in the form of rods 1 and 2, each of substantially semicircular cross-section, and some what reduced in thickness at the middle portion thereof, as at 5, whereby is formed a head portion 6 and an open, although rather narrow space is obtained between the members when the fiat surfaces of said heads are i brought in contact with each other (Fig. l). 45 Due to the reduced cross-section of the iniddle portions of the rods these portions are somewhat resilient. At the rear or handle end each rod is provided with an enlargement 8 and 9 respectively, the inner surfaces of which are flat and rest against each other when the implement is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
The members 1 and 2 are at the rear or handle end connected by means of a pin and enlarged opening connection 3', 4 respectively. Said pin 3 is secured to the rod 1 and extends freely into the enlarged opening 4 in the other rod 2. Said enlarged openmg 4 is of a diameter which is somewhat greater than that of the pin3, so that the said rods are capable of relative movement 1n more than one direction, that is, not only may the rod 2 be rotated more or less on the pin 3', this latter then serving as a pivot and the movement taking place iu a plane at right angles to that of the paper in Fig. l, but the rods may also be moved relatively in the mannerindicated in Fig. 2, which movement may take placein a plane at a right angle or at another angle to that of the plane of first mentioned movement.
Both of the said relative movements are, however, limited by a ring 7 of metal or the like, arranged so as to embrace the rods 1 and 2, and displaceable thereon. Said ring 7 is of a diameter somewhat greater than the combined diameters of the rods near the rear or handle ends thereof, as will be seen from Fig. 4, but somewhat less than the combined diameters of the rods at or near the free or head ends thereof. Thus, by displacing the ring 7 along the rods towards their free ends the ring may be used as a tightening means which press the two rods against each other, whereby these firmly grip any wash which is placed between the head ends 6 thereof.
Due to the resiliency of the rods at the middle` reduced portions thereof the ring will be held in such clamping position and the gripped wash Amay be handled and manipulated by means of the implement without the necessity of touching the wash with the hands. In order that the ring 7 shall not inadvertently fall oit' from the rods the handle ends thereof are each provided with an enlargement 8 and 9 respectively.`
Fig. 5 illustrates a preferred embodiment of the implement. The same is generally of the form described in connection with Figs. 1-4 but the enlargement 8 is provided with an extension 8 in which is arranged a slot 10 of such dimensions that the implement may by means thereof be placed on the edge of a washing tub 11 as illustrated at the drawing. For wringing operation one end of a piece of wash is then gripped between the heads of one implement which is then placed upon the edge of the washing tub as shown, whereupon the other end of the said piece of wash is gripped by a similar implement, or by an implement as shown in Figs. 1-4, and then the wash `may be twisted and wrought Cil member loosely tted into an enlarged opening near the end of the other member and allowing relative movement of said members in more than one direction 'and means arranged slidably on the members for securingr the same firmly together.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
ANDREAS ELLINGSEN SOKKA.
