To all whom "it may concern:

. Be it known that I, PATRICK MLHAN, of Gambridgeport in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs or Stools for School-Houses, 820.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

In the said drawing, Figure 1 denotes a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a central andyertical sect-ion, of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention.

My invention is especially designed for halls, &c., which are ventilated or heated by air introduced through a port-opening under each I seat, of which the invention shown in Letters Patent granted to me on June 29, 1875, is a type and my invention consists in forming the pedestal of the chair or stool hollow, or with an air-chamber, and with a base ofgreater diameter or area than the air-port in the floor over which it is to be placed,and making any desirable number of educts opening laterally out of the chamber of the pedestal, so as to distribute the air equably around a person when sitting on the chair.

In the drawing, A denotes the seat of an ordinary chair. B is the pedestal, which is securely fixed, by means of screws, or in any other suitable manner, to the under surface of the seat. The base of the pedestal is formed I flaring, and with an annular flange, a, extendin g around it, through holes in which screws or bolts are to be passed, in order to secure the device'to the floor. In the base of the foot or pedestal is made a hollow or dome-shaped chamber, b, opening into an axial passage (forming a continuation of the chamber) extending upward through the pedestal. From the chamber b an annular series of holes, 0, are made through the walls of the pedestal,

the same serving to convey the air from the chamber, (when the device is located over an air-port,) and distribute it laterally in minute currents around the chair. d d, &;c., are another series of holes arranged vertically, so as to conduct the air backward instead of forward toward the legs of the occupant of the chair.

I do not, however, confine myself to the specific location or arrangement of the eduction-orifices, as shown, nor to the number of them, as there may be any desirable number, and they may open out of the chamber of the pedestal at any desirablepoint or points. 0 is a meniscus-shaped guard or deflector, which is disposed over the series of horizontal holes 0.

This deflector I do not consider as an essential part of my invention; but it may be employed, if desirable, as it tends to give a wider lateral diffusion of the air when arranged over an air-port.

Having described my invention, what I claim is A chair or stool provided with a hollow pedestal, having a series of orifices opening out of the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
