`GEORGE FROST ANDGEORGE H. PHELPS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN UNDER-WAISTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,899, dated November 16, 1875; application iiled T o allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE FROsT and GEORGE HENRY PHELPs, of Boston, county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented and made certain Improvements in the Construction of certain parts of a Combined Under-Waist and Skirt-Supporter, (patented by us in Letters Patent No. 161,851, under date of April 6, 1875,) of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, and in which like letters indicate the same parts in all views, Figure l represents a front elevation of our combined Waist and skirt-supporter. Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation of the same. Figs. 3` and 4 show, respectively, detached .views of the front and side sections of the front body of the waist 5 Figs. 5, 6, and 7 ,detached views of the front and back of one of the bosomforms. y
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the backs, with extension-pieces, forming the seamless yoke of two parts, by means of which the support from the shoulders is obtained. These parts extend from the front at B to the arms at the points marked C 5 thence over the uting the strain of the lacing equally upony the Waist. The front of the under-Waist consists of the bosom-form, of two parts, D D, one for each side, and the body or lower front ofthe same, of four parts, E E and F F. Each side of the bosom form is cut as is shown by Fig. 5, and gathered at lthe top, O O, in such a manner as to give rotund fullness of form, while the desired fullness at the bottom is given by the peculiar concave cut d d. These parts are attached to the yoke, as seen in Fig. l, at D D, forming that part of the waist between the yoke and the body or lower front E F. The back of each side of the bosom-form (not shown in Fig. 1) is composed of two pieces of cloth, cut as is shown by Figs. 6 and 7, gathered to correspond with September 11, 17875.
I the front piece, Fig. 5, and fastened together at the center, b, by a button, for convenience in filling with hair or other suitable material for stuffing.
The two parts E E of the lower front of the waist are cut as is shownby Fig. 3, in which is a double convex Opening, c c', which, in process of manufacture, is closed up, forming the seams c c in Fig. 1, thereby giving a spring to the part E E at the proper place. The two parts F F are cut as is shown by Fig. 4. The curvature of the seams g g and o k, and the position and size of the lopening c c in the parts E E, may be varied when such variation may be necessary to tit differmust be retained. To keep the seam g, Fig. l, from gathering and fulling, and to keep it smooth and in place, two small bones are inserted', one on each side thereof, as indicated by the dotted lines in said view. These bones, and those in the back of the waist at l l, Fig. 2, are the only ones we employ in the construction of our waist. By leaving out all these bones, and by substituting in place thereof at l l, Fig. 2, a piece of non-elastic webbing, and by reducing the curvature of all the seams in the garment, and the size of the diii'erent parts, the Waist is thus made especially adapted for children. The front of the waist is fastened with .buttons c a', as shown in Fig. 1. The support of tlhe skirts at a tiXed point or points we obtain by means of the contrivance, the num ber of which is to be at option of wearer. We do not broadly claim a gathered bosomthe patent of Susan Taylor Converse, No. 166,190, of August 3, 1875.
We claim as our inventionporter, the combination ofthe yoke A, bosomform D, and the body or lower front parts E E and F F, the whole constructed and combined substantially as herein specified.
GEO. EEosT. y GEORGE HENRY PHELPs.
