UNITED STATES 1,698,977 PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT H. WENTORF, OF WEST BEND, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR- TO W'EST BEND ALUMI- NUM COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF W'ISCONSIN.
COOKER VALVE.
Application led March .3,
The invention relates to escape Vvalves and is more particularly directed to that class of valves used for cooking vessels such as boilers or Steamers, and has for its primary object the provision of a valve that may be so assembled as to provide either an automatically operated valve or a valve that can be manually operated to secure the valve closuremember in either open or closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve, simple in construct-ion, having few parts and economical of manufacture.
The invention is more particularly applicable to that class of Steamers or boilers having a cover with what is known as a steam tight lit.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description, which is directed to the preferred embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a cover for a boiler with my invention attached thereto, a part of the cover being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. l taken on line 2 2.
Fig. 3 is a central fragmentary section of 30 the cover with the valve removed.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section of the cover taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail eleva-tional view .of the operating plate for the valve shown in full lines with the spacing plate shown in dotted lines and in one position with relation to the operating plate.
Fig. 6 is a detail elevational view of the spacing plate.
Fig. is a detail elevational view of the assembled valve with the spacing plate in closer relation to the operating plate.
lteferrinn now to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the reference character 10 represents a cover for a boiler having downwardly struck spherical concavity 11 in the approximate center thereof, which has aperture 12 therethrough and concentric with the concavity 11 through which aperture valve stem 13 is adapted to have reciprocal movement, there being a clearance between the periphery of the aperture 12 and the valve stem 13 for the escape of steam from the boiler when the valve is in open position. Valve stem 13 Cal 1922. Serial No. 540,468.
carries at its upper extremity an operating plate 14, which has upstanding ears 15 forming` convenient means for rotating the plate with the lingers. Operating plate 14 has spacing studs 1G depending from the bottom thereof. Valve stein 13 is enlarged at its upper portion and adjacent operating plate 14 into a substantially spherical shaped closure memberl 17, which is adapted to scat in the concavity 11 and close aperture 12. Spacing plate 18 carries on its upper face spacing studs 19 and is non-rotatably mounted on the lower portion of valve stern 13 with the upper extremities of spacing studs 19 lying in the saine vertical plane as spacing studs 16 of the operating plate and spaced therefrom, as clearly shown in Figs. and 7. Cover is provided with a plurality of shoulders or bosses 20, which are preferably upstruck from the material forming the cover and being so spaced with relation to the aperture 12 to be in the line of movement of spacing studs 16 and 19 when the operating plate 14 is rotated. Cover 10 is also provided with handles 21, which handles lie in a plane above the top of the upstanding ears of the operating plate let, thereby serving the double purpose of providing lifting handles for the cover and protecting means for the valve seat when the cover is laid or tossed upon a table, the handles 21 preventing the operating plate from coming in contact with the table when the cover is laid bottom up thereon.
It will readily be seen by reference to Figs. 3, a and 7 that if operating plate 14. be so positioned that the spacing studs 1G rest on the tops of the shoulders or bosses the spacing studs 19 carried by the spacing plate 18 will contact with the upper wall of recesses 22 which are formed on the under side of the covei' by the formation of shoulders or bosses 20.
Referring to Fig. 7, it will be readily seen from the foregoing that if the spacingv studs 16 and 19 be so placed with relation to each other as to leave a space therebetween equal to the thickness of the material forming the cover 10, and the studs 16 are placed upon the tops of the shoulders or bosses 20 the valve will be secured in open position, whereas, if the operating plate 14 be so po-V sitioned as to place the spacing studs 16 intermediate the shoulders or bosess 20 the an aperture through the concav v spacing` studs 19 will engage the inner face of cover 10, thereby securing the valve in closed position.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the spacing member 18 in dotted lines as carried by the valve stem 13 With the extremities of spacing studs 19 at a greater distance from the extremity of the spacing` stud 16 than the thickness of the material ormingthe cover l0.
lith the valve members assembled as ust described the valve vvill become automatic and Will be forced-into open position by the contacto the steam `with the closure member 17 and so held until the pressure oi' the steam Within the boiler is lowered sufficiently for the closure member 17 to reseat by reasonoiE the Weight ot spacingplate 1b. 'lt 1will be readily seen however that should the operating plate lebe rotated in such manner as to cause the spacing studs lo to rest upon the tops of shoulders or bosses 20 the valve Vwill be secured in open position.
From the foregoing' disclosure it will be seen that I have provideda valve vstr-uuture which may be used as a simple gravity actuated poppet valve or a valve that may be locked in open position or a valve that may be locked in either opened or closed position without the alteration of any orn its parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimis:
1. The con'ibination with a cover 'tor a boiler having' a spherical concavity therein, an aperture through the conoavity and bosses on the outer side ofthe cover, of an operating` plate, a-closure member 'carried by the operating plate, said closure member having a stem adapted to haverecipro'cal movement in the aperture, spacing I plate aiiixed to the lower portion of thestem, upstanding,- spacing members carried by th, spacing plate, and dependent .spacing` mem@ bers carried by the operatingy plate.
2. The combination with a cover for La boiler having a spherical concavity therein,
' l and bestses on the outer side of the cover, of an operating plate, a closure member carried by the operating; plate, said closure member havingl a stem adapted to have reciprocal movement in the aperture, a spacing plate atlixed to the lower portion of the 'stem7 upstanding spacing members carried by the spacing plate, and dependent spacing members carried by the operating late and in vertical alignment with the spacing' members of the spacing` plate.
3. The combination with the cover of a boiler provided with a spherical concavity having an aperture formed therein, a
closure member co-operable with said concavity and having' a stem ad )ted Vfor reciprocal mover-nent in lsaid vape Lure, an operatingrgv plate associated Ewith id Amember and stem, bosses formed on said cover-,-means associated Yvvithfsaid iplate and (wi-operable with said bosses tor controlling lthe position oi" said member, and means associated with said stem for limiting' the movement oi' said member.
4. The combination with a cover ior 'a boiler having; a spherical concavity'therein, an aperture through and concentric with the concavity7 u; ruck portions ot the' cover forming'bosss on one face thereof, and recesses on the opposite tace thereof, o' a closure member, a stem carri al by the closure membe and adapted to have movement in the aperture7 an operating plate atiiled to the closure member, dependent spacing members secured -to the operating plate7 a spacing` plate secured to the lovver portion of thel stem, upstanding spacing members secured to the spacing plate, and means 1for rotating' the operating plate, the said bosses lying in the path ofrotation ot the spacing' members carried by the operating. plate.
5. The combination with acover for a cooking` vessel having,` an apertured valve seat-therein, of a boss Jformed in the cover at one side with a co-related depressionat the other, and a closure member adaptedto engage the said seat and'having1 ya stem passing] through the aperture andcarryingprojections at opposite sides of the cover, one oic said projections being adapted to ride over the i`oe-:s-arul the other to enter the dcpression when the valve member is rotated.
ln testimony whereof have signed mv name to this specification on this 2Mo (l1-rv oi. lte-)ruary A. l). 1922. l
