HAIR AND SCALP TREATIN APPARATUS;

This invention relates to hair andscalptreating apparatus of improved construction and has as a general object the provision of a device which may be constructed at small cost, which may be quickly and easily posi-- 1 on the hair and scalp and will pass through the hair and over the scalp and thereafter escape from the cap in a manner such as to insure etficient and uniform treatment.

A further object of the invention to provide a device of the type described which is made of paper or other suitable flexible material and which may be manufactured at such a low cost that it may be discarded after being used once, thereby insuring posltive sanitary conditions of treatment for each patient.

Other objects of the invention Wlll 1n part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of partswhich will be exemplified in the constructions hereinafter set forth and'the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of the device shown in operating position;

Fig. 3 is a view of a blank from which the device shown in Fig. 1 is formed, portions thereof being shown in formed position and other portions being broken away; and

I As above indicated, the tubular member 12 may be constructed of any suitable material, although, for reasons of economy and sanitation, it is preferred to construct the same of paper. For this purpose any type of paper or fabric may be used which will with stanchth e pressure of the blower. and any softening effect which may arise due to the moistened condition of the hair or such vapors as may arise or form from use of the blower, or that maybe used in the blower.

As shown 1n Fig. 3, a blank 12 is cut from the material used, preferably -in a form approximating a trapezoid, whereby, when the inclined side edges 13 thereof are pasted together, the device forms a truncated cone, as shown in Fig.1. and the seam 14: formed by the pasted portions is narrow and without bulk. It is to be understood, however,

that since the material is flexible and the tubular cap is gathered in at the top and bottom when in use, the edges may, if desired, be-overlapped to a greater extent and the form of the blank may be varied widely.

At itsbottom the blank is provided with a series of slits 15- forming tongue-portions '16. In the preferred form these slits are wider at the bottom than at the top, whereby the lower ends of the tongue-portions 16 are narrower than the upper ends, although, obviously, the slits may be of any desired configuration. -This construction, as will be seen. serves to reduce the bulk of the materialat the bottom end of the cap when it is positioned on the head of the patient and allows of a close and comfortable adjustment of the device on the patient.

Attached to the tongues 16 in any suitable manner is preferably provided a flexible gathering member 17. In the exemplification shown. this member 17 is attached to the tongues 16 byfolding the tongues over slightly and pasting or otherwise securing them to formloops 18.. through which the member 17 is passed. Also,'in the preferred constructiomthe member 17 comprises an elastic band, although it is to-bc understood that other types of flexible securing member, such as a draw-cord which may be tied in position, may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

'As shown in Fig. 2, when the tongues 16 are drawn inwardly in position around the head of the patient the slits 15 form openings through which the escaping air or, va-

pors from the blower are released after they have passed through the hair and over the scalp. If the capacity of the blower is large, and the material used in the construction of the cap is relatively weak, auxiliary release openings 19 may be provided. as shown in Fig. 4, adjacent the inner ends of the slits 16 so that when the cap is in position on the head of the patient these openings 19 will be positioned below the scalpline of the patient, whereby interference with the full and uniform flow of gases in the device is obviated. These are shown as being of round configuration, but may be of any desired shape so long as an effective flushing out of the gases by the blower is accomplished at a point at or below the hair line of 'the patient.

Owing to its flexibility, the tubular member'l2 may be passed over the mouth of the blower 11, gathered slightly and secured in position by any desired clamping means,

such as a. spring-clip, cord or elastic band 20. Particularly, when using paper and like materials, the device may, if desired, be

turned over at its upper end as at 21 for the urpose of reinforcement.

The device comprising the present invention is particularly adapted for a number of uses, but particularly for the treating of hair and scalp, drying hair, and in making Water waves or finger waves and the like.

Since certain changes ma be made in the above construction and iflerent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying'drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I

1. A device of the class described, comprising a tubular member adapted to be attached at one end to a blower and to be positioned at the other end on the'head of a. pa-

tient, and havingopenings at the bottom thereof to release gases from the blower below the hairline of the patient, said openings being so positioned with respect to the lower edge of said tubularmember as to assist in drawing said lower edge closely adjacent the head of the patient, a

prising a flexible tubular member adapted to be attached at one end to a blower and to be positioned at the other end on the head of a patient and having openings at the bottom thereof to release gases from the blower below the hair line of the patient, said openings being so positioned with respect to the lower edge of said tubular member as to assist .in drawing said lower edge closely adjacent the head of the patient and means for drawing the edges of the bottom end of the tubular member close to the head of the patient.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a flexibletubular member adapted to be attached at one end to a blower and to be positioned at the other end on the head of a patient, and having openings at the bottom end of the tubular member close to the head of the patient.

A device 0 the class described, comprising a flexible tubular member adapted be attached at one end to a blower and to be positioned at the other end on the head of a. patient and having slits and tongues at .its bottom edge, means. for drawing thetongues adjacent the head of the patient whereby the slits form openings to release the gases from the blower below the hair line of the patient, and having auxiliary release openings formed adjacent the inner ends of the slits.

A device of theflclass described, comprising a flexible tubular member adapted to be attached at one end to a blower and to be positioned at the other end on the head of a patient, and havingslits and tongues at its bottom edge, said tongues being looped over and having flexible means passed through the loops thus formed whereby'the same may be drawn adjacent the head of the patient.
