Description

Jan. 1, 1929." 1,696,907
I J. C. FISCHER FURNACE CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 1926 Patented Jan. 1, 1929- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH C. FISCHER, OF WAUWATOSA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MELVIN D. JOHNSON, 0F MILWAUKEE, XVISCONSIN.
FURNACE oon'srnuorron.
Application filed December 8, 1926'. Serial No. 153,341.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in furnace constructions and refers more particularly to the dead plate located at the forward end of a furnace firing chamber and the ash pit along the grate line.
Due to the intense heat to which these plates are subjected, they soon become warped or burnt out and need replacing and it has been a very difficult operation to replace the same as heretofore they have had their ends embedded in the brick of the furnace necessitatinc; the removal of the jambs to replace the same. Attempts have been made to overcome this diliiculty as evidenced by the patent to Pcttie, No. 1,223,828, issued April 24, 1917, wherein a reversible dead end plate is provided which, when warped, may be turned and which when burnt out may be renewed without destroying the brick of the furnace j amb or arch.
This invention contemplates a novel removable furnace dead plate which may be instantly removed for replacement and which has means for securing the same against accidental detachment or against shifting of the same on its support.
And a further object of this invention is to simplify and improve the construction of furnace dead plates.
lVith the above and other objects in view whi ch will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and. arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter disclosed and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
in the accompanying drawing, I have illustra ted one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed ac cording to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view, with parts broken away and in section, of a furnace equipped with my improved dead plate, and V Figure 2 is a perspective view of my improved dcad plate and its supports detached from the furnace structure.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 desig nates the brick jambs of a furnace and 6 the arch of the opening to the fire chamber of the furnace. The front of the furnace is covered with a suit-able surfacing 7 and iron doors, not shown, normally close the openings to the fire and ash chambers betweenthe jambs 5. on a level with the furnace grate, not shown, is a dead plate 8 which extends from the outer face of the jambs 5 to the grate, not shown, and heretofore the dead plate has consisted of a. one-piece member having its ends embedded in the bricks forming the jambs 5 at the time the furnace is The dead plate 8 has its side edges: 12 reduced to provide shoulders 13 of a depth substantially that of the support shoulders 10, and the shoulders 13 are spaced apart slightly less than the distance between the inner ends of the supports 9 and the overall length of the dead plate 8 is slightly less than the distance between the shoulders .11 of the supports so that the dead plate may be readily dropped onto the supports 9 as shown.
Accidental shifting or dislodgment of the dead plate from the supports is prevented by studs or projections 14 extended from the reduced portions of the dead plate and en gageable in slots of recesses 15 in the reduced portions of the supports, cotter pins or dowel pins 16 being passed through openings 17 in the studs 14, if desired, to prevent the accidental lifting of the dead plate from the supports.
From the. foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains that I provide a novel and improved dead plate construction which is extremely simple in construction and which is readily removable for the purpose of replacement.
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In a furnace including brick Jambs delinlng theside Walls of an opening leading into the furnace fire chamber, a support en1-' bedded in each jainb with is outer .end,ex tended into the opening, the outer ends of the supports having their upper surfaces re duced to provide a shelf, a dead plate having the under surface of its outer ends reduced to fit the reduced ends ot the support ,and
adapted to 'be supported thereon, and studs projected from the reduced ends of the dead plate and projectuble through recesses in the reduced ends of the supports to prevent the accidental removal of the dead plate from its supports.
2. In a furnace including brick jumbs defining the side Walls of an opening leading the studs from the under side of the supports.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature.
JOSEPH C. FISCHER.
