This invention relates to an air cooled piston construction designed especially for use in connection with internal combustion engines, but it is to be understood that an air cooled piston construction, in accordance with this invention can be used for and in any connection with which it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide for the cooling of the piston during its movements by atmospheric air thereby maintaining the piston at maximum efficiency and minimizing the consumption of lubricant, resulting thereby in a material reductionin maintenance cost;
Further objects of the invention are to provide an air cooled piston construction in a: manner as hereinafter set forth, and which is comparatively simple in its arrangement, compact, economical when used, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and. illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes; variations and modifications can be had which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

An air cooled piston construction in ac cordance with this invention includes a cylinder referred to generally by the reference character 1 and a piston referred to generally by the reference character 2. The cylinder 1 provides a piston chamber 3 in which reciprocates the piston 2, the latter is illustrated, by Way of example, as constructed and arranged. for transferring its power through the medium of a wrist pin 4 forming an element of an operating means 5 for a pair of shaft impellers 6 connected to and driving a power transmitting shaft 7. The wrist pin 4, impeller operating means 5, inipfeller 6 and shaft 7 do not form part of the air cooled piston construction, in accordance with this invention, but illustrated by way of example to show the arrangement of the pistons 2 in operative driving relation with a power transmission therehetween and the shaft 7 and the said wrist pin 4,. operating means 5 and impellers 6 form elements of an internal combustion engine construction, forming a part of my applications Sr. No. 182,80l, 182,806 and 183,815, filed April 11. and 17, 1927, and specifically referred to in such applications; To provide for the travel of the Wrist pin 4, which is carried by the piston 2, the cylinder 1 is formed with a pair of diametrically disposed slots 8, 9- through which extends the wrist pin 4:
The cylinder 1, which forms an element of the air cooled piston construction, in accordance with this invention, istorni'e'rl with a pair. of diametrically opposed lengthwise extending slots 10; 11 arranged at right angles with respect to the slots 8, 9; The slots 10 and 11 provide means for the passage of atmospheric air for the purpose of cooling the piston 2'.
The piston 2 comprises a tubular body portion 12 and a forward and a rearward head 13, 1 1 respectively providing means for closing the ends of the body portion 12 and the latter in connection" with the heads form the cooling air receiving elramher 15. The body portion 12 at each end of its periphery is formed with a plurality of annular grooves 16 for the reception of packing rings 17. The inner face of the head 13 has formed integral therewith rearwardly directed, spaced cooling fins 18 of triangular cross section and which are also integral with the inner face of the body portion 12. The fins 18 are disposed diametrically with respect to the piston 2.
The body portion 12, at its transverse median, is formed with a pair of diametrically opposed openings 19, 20 which when the piston 2 is mounted in the cylinder 1 registers with the slots 8, 9. Formed integral with the inner face of the body portion 12 is a pair of oppositely disposed wrist pin bearing sleeves 21, 22 which register with the openings 19, 20 respectively. The sleeves are spaced from each other at the inner ends thereof and are ribbed. Arranged within the body portion 12 is a pair of spaced, aligning bafiies 23, 2t which are integral with the sleeves 21, 22 and are disposed at the longitudinal median thereof. The body portion 12 at right angles to the openings 19, 20 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed lengthwise extending slots 25, 26 which register with the slots 10, 11 respectively and provide means, in connection with'the slots 10 and 11, forsupplying and discharging atmospheric air to the chamber 15 for the purpose of cooling the piston 2 during its movements. The baffle 23 opposes the forward end of the slots 25, 26 and the bafile 24 opposes the slots 25, 26 in advance of the rear end thereof and .said bafiies constitute means for deflecting the air when entering the chamber 15 so that the cooling air Will impact substantially against the inner face of the body portion 12 throughout and cool the same. The head 13 has its outer face formed with a deflector 27 for the incoming combustible charge. The deflector 27 is of curved contour and has the intermediate portion thereof offset with respect to the axis of the head 13.
The construction and arrangement pro? vides for the circulation of cooling air through the piston 2 during its movement, and under such conditions the piston is cooled, as the airwill impact substantially against the inner face of the chamber 15, during, the reciprocations 10f the piston therefore it is thought the many advantages of an air cooled piston construction, in accordance with this invention can be readily understood,-and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fallwithin the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A piston for internal combustion motors comprising a hollow body portion closed at its outer and at its inner end and providing a cooling air receiving chamber, said body formed intermediate its ends with a pair of diametrically opposed slots forming intake and exhaust for the cooling air, said body portion further formed with diametrically opposed openings arranged at right angles to the slots, and wrist pin bearing sleeves integral with and arranged within said body portion and registering with said openings.
2. A piston for internal combustion motors comprising a hollow body portion closed at its outer and at its inner end and providing a cooling air receiving chamber, said body formed intermediate its ends with a pair of diametrically opposed slots forming intake and exhaust for the cooling air, and spaced baflies integral with said bearing sleeves.
3. A piston for internal combustion motors comprising a hollow body portion closed at its outer and at its inner end and providing a cooling air receiving chamber, said body formed intermediate its ends. with a pair of diametrically, opposed .slots forming intake and exhaustfor theicooling air, and spaced diametrically disposed baffles arranged within saidchamber, and'opposing said slots. 7
4. A piston for internal combustion motors comprising a hollow body portion closed at its outer and at itsinner end and providing a coolingair receiving chamber, said'bo'dy formed intermediate its ends with a pair. of diametrically opposed slots forming intake and exhaustifor the cooling air, spaced diametrically"disposed baliles arranged within said" chamber and opposing said slots, said body portion further provided with diametrically opposed openings arranged at right angles to said slots, and spaced, opposed,- wrist pin bearing sleeves integral with andarranged within said body portion and registering with said openings.
