WILLIAM. GUY BERRY AND MAE BERRY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTION-ENGINE PISTON.
' Application filed June 16, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, TVIIJLIAM G. BERRY and MAE BERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at 1552 Payne Avenue, Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion- Engine Pistons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pistons for internal combustion engines, one object of the invention being to provide an improved piston of this class embodying a skirt provided with openings formed by end bars which are longitudinally curved,
which add materially to the strength of the piston, cause the expansion to be endwise of the piston, add greatly to the durability of the piston, reduce wear thereon and affect a material economy in the use of lubricating oil, and motor fuel, and also enable the engine to be driven at increased speed.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved piston, the skirt of which is provided with step joints, which obviate diametral expansion of the piston and compensate for wear of the skirt.
, Another object is to provide an improved piston which is made of aluminum alloy, which fits tightly in the cylinder in which it it used and with no allowance for diametral expansion.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a piston constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same at right angle to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. taken on the plane indicated on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-1 of Figure 1.
Our improved piston 1 is made of aluminum alloy and constitutes a single casting. The body 2 of the piston is provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

annular grooves to receive the usual piston ring 3, any suitable number of which may be used. Formed with the body of the piston is the skirt 4 which has openings 5. These openings are formed between integral end bars 6 each of which is curved longitudinally as shown, the said end bars being united at their inner ends by the body of the piston and being united at their outer ends by the skirt, which is provided with step joints, cut therein as at 7 and which form open rings 8. The side edges of the end bars are sharpened as at 9 to cut and prevent the accumulation of carbon, and preferably the end bars are segmental in cross section, as shown in Figure 3. The usual openings 10 are formed in the piston at the points where the end bars join the body 2 for the reception of the pivot pin of the pitman.
Our improved piston is very much stronger than a piston made of cast iron, the expansion therein is lengthwise of the piston, no allowance is made for diametral expansion. taking the wear of the skirt, affects an economy in the use of motor fuel and lubricating oil and adds materially to the power and efficiency of the engine in which it is used. I
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
1. An internal combustion motor piston comprising a body portion and a skirt, said skirt having openings extending through its wall and also having step joints in its outer end.
2. An internal combustion motor piston comprising a body portion and a: skirt, said skirt having openings extending through its wall and also having step joints in its outer end, said openings being formed between longitudinally curved end bars.
3. An internal combustion motor piston comprising a body portion and a skirt, said skirt having openings extending through its walls and also having step joints in its outer end, said openings being formed between longitudinally curved end bars, and said end bars presenting sharpened edges.
TVILLIAM GUY BERRY. MAE BERRY.
