Description

w. JEFFREYS DENTAL IMPLEMENT Filed Sept. 2, 1927 V ATTORN EY Patented Dec. 25, 1928.
if UNITED STATES WILLIAM JEFFREYS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY:
DENTAL IMPLEMENT.
7 Application filed September The present invention relates to dental implements and particularly to devices for ejecting material lodged between the teeth.
Objects of the invention are to produce a device for the above purpose by means of which a fluid may be impeiled with force tour thereof and to the contour of the adj acent gum.
Other objects are simplicity'of construction, cheapness of manufacture, and ease of operation without danger of damaging the teeth or gums.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following specification and will be set forth in the appended claim, and I do not-wish to be limited in the scope of my invention except as I shall be limited by said claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a device in accordance with my invention, showing the same in elevation and pressed against the arch of teeth, a portion of which is shown for purposes of illustration.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Figure 1, showing the internal construction of the device and also illustrating the manner in which the same presses against the gums as well as against the teeth.
Figure 2-3 is a detail perspective view of the nozzle of the device, showing the construction of its outer end.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates a hollow bulb which is of compressible material, such as rubber, and which may be of any suitable shape, in the present instance being shown as balloon-shaped and having a stem 11 projecting therefrom, said stem being provided with a central bore 12 and an outer flat shoulder 13. Secured to the end of said stem is a nozzle 14 which central bore 15 aligned with and forming 2, 1927. Serial ll'o. 217,204.
a continuation of the bore 12. The nozzle 14 is connected with the stem 11 by means of a nietailic tube 16 extending therethrough and through the stem and having a central bore to provide a passageway for fluid drawn into the bulb 10 for ejection between the teeth. The outer end of the nozzle 14: is preferably provided with three faces 17, 18 and 19 converging toward the center thereof and adapted to roughly conform to the juncture between the gum and any two adjacent teeth. By bringing a slight amount of pressure to bear thereon, complete conformity to the teeth and gums at such a juncture may be effected, whereby the full force of the ejected liquid will be operative between the teeth and the liquid will not pass out around the teeth to any purpose.
1n operation, the end of the nozzle is dipped into a vessel containing fluid to be used and the same is then pressed against the teeth and gums to form a tight fit above referred to, whereupon the bulb 10 may be squeezed with considerable force and suddenness, ejecting the liquid through the nozzle and between the teeth, dislodging any foreign particles that may be lodged therebetween. i
It will be understood that while I show the nozzle of my device, as applied to a compressible bulb, in dental work it may be connected to any suitable device for forcing a fluid therethrough, as compressed air, or an engine for projecting liquid with force, and the present showing issiinply illustrative, the connection to other devices not being shown inasmuch as it is believed that the principle of the device is fully illus .rated by connection with a bulbof this char-' acter.
Having described the invention, whatl claim is:
A dental syringe comprisl a soft vulcanized rubber bulb, a nozzle of sin'iilar ma terial, a thin metallic tubular lining for the nozzle forming a passage from the bulb. the front face of the nozzle being of are triangular shape. c
Intestimony whereof I atiix my signature.
lVILLfAM JEFFREYS.
