Description

s. PENKSA SAP sPoUT Filed Feb. v. 1.921
Patented ct, ld, 1924.
Swan-Lay frinitiatie,` or mustermann CITY. `naw Yoan,
SAP SPOUT.
Application led February 7, 1921.l Serial No. 443.291.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY PnNnsA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of `Queens if and State of New` York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sap Spouts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sap spout and il@ has for its object to provide an improved spout especially adapted for the collection of sap from the sugar maple tree.
An object of the invention is a sap spout having a retaining means whereby the 1% spout will be anchored to the tree.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sap spout having means whereby leakage of the sap will be prevented.
A principal object of the invention'is to provide a sap spout so constructed that it` must go into the tree in an inclined position in order that nov sap will stand in the spout long enough to freeze as quite often happens with spouts of the usual construction.
With the above and other objects in view which will more fully appear hereinafter, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aview of a tree, partly broken away, showing my sap spout in use thereon,
Figure 2 is a similar view the tree being partly in section in order to show the enw tire spout construction in elevation,
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the spout.
`-Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the 'following specifica-- tion and in the several views in the drawings in whichv l indicates an inclined bore in a tree trunk the bore extending up from the bark toward the heart of the tree. In the bore is a sap spout 2, the inner part 3 of which is in the shape of a hollow cone with relatively large cut-outs a and 5 in the sides thereof. Arranged at a point dividing the inner part 3 and the spout proper 6 is an annular flange 7 so positioned that when the flange is flat against the outer surface of the tree, the apex 8 of the cone must be pointing up so that the entire device is held inclined relative to the trunk of the tree, and the lips 9 of the spout at the lowest point of the device except that of the hook 10 for a sap receptacle or bucket m 11. The apex 8 is provided with a series of barbs 12 so inclined that when once driven into the body of the tree they will not pull out through any weight of the sap bucket, or said apexmay be used with- @0 out said barbs. Furthermore, the angle of the spout 6 relative to its conical portion 3 is such that the strain of the weight of the sap bucket is not directly against said barbs. The hook 10 on the end of the spout @5 is thickened at 92L and arranged to withstand blows from a hammer when being driven into the tree.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new is:-
1. A device of the character described having a conically formed inner terminal, a spout and an annular flange at the rear of said spout, said terminal being spiked, a hollow spider formation connecting said terminal and said spout.
Q. A device of the character described consisting of an inclined spout terminating in a vertical flange and means for holding said spout connected to .a sap opening, said means consisting of an inclined hollow spider.
3. A device of the character described including a skeleton inner portion terminating in a cone, an inclined spout and a vertical -annular flange surrounding` said spout. v 4. A device of the character described including a skeleton inner portion terminating. in a cone, an inclined spout and a vertical annular flange surrounding said spout, and means whereby one endof said spout may be held into a tree cavity andvsaid flange held bound against the outer edge of said cavity.
5. A device of the character described in cluding a skeleton inner portion terminating in a cone, an inclined spout and a vertical annular flange surrounding said spout, and means whereby one end of said spout may be held into a tree cavity and said flange held bound against the outer edge of said cavity, said meansconsisting of inclined teeth on said cone.
6. A device of the character described consisting of an inclined spout'terminating in a vertical flange and means for holding said spout connected to `a sap opening, spider terminating in a solid cone, said cone said .means consisting of an inclined spider, having teeth inclined toward said spider. 10
said spidernterminating in a solid cone;v In testimony whereof I aX my signature i 7. A. device of the 'character` described in the presenceof two Witnesses. consisting of anVA inclined spout terminating f STANLEY PENKSA.
in a vertical flange and means for holding Witnesses:
` said spout connected to asap opening, said LOUIS STEIN,
means consisting 0f an'inclined spider, said WM. F. SWi31\'IEY."
