at the inside and the other at the outside of the door by which the shaft sections may be rotated and separate devices actuated by t-he shaft sections for releasing the bolt from its locking position together with suitable devices surrounding the outer axle section and relatively adjustable angularly to establish different combinations whereby when adjusted topredetermined positions, Will permit the unlocking of the bolt by the outer handle but normally prevent the unlocking of the bolt until the proper relative adjustments of the devices are made.
The main object is to provide a simple, compact and efficient lock of this character which may he made and sold at a compara tively lovv cost and which when installed Will permit the bolt to be readily unlocked from the inside of the door by the turning of the innerl handle in either direction but Will prevent the unlocking of the bolt from the outside handle until the controlling devices are re-adj usted to the predetermined position t-o release the bolt.
Another object is to permit the controlling devices to be easily and quickly changed to different combinations When desired.

lt is now evident that the bolt l5 is automatically forced to its locking position by the spring l8 and that it may be withdrawn from said locking posit-ion against the action of the spring by the turning movement of the tubular shaft section 5 in either direction through the medium of the handle which causes one or the other of the arms 19- to engage the corresponding lug l7 ofthe bolt l5 to withdraw the latter inwardly independently of any turning movement of the shaft section 4 and its handle 1l rThe bolt l.5 may be withdrawn from its locking position by the turning of the handle 6 at the inside of the door in either direction but suitable means is provided for prcnenting` the turning movement of the outer handle ll and its corresponding shaft section -t until certain controlling elements hereinafter described have been previously adjusted to certain positions.
For this latter purpose7 a circular disk 28- is brazed or otherwise secured. to the inner face of the plate 1 and is provided with a series of inwardly projecting shoulders or lugs 29- arranged in uniformly spaced relation circumferentially about the axis of the shaft sections 1 and 5 to be engagvred by springs Q9 which are secured to the hub of a disk 30 (one of the lock-controlling disks) in a manner and for a purpose hereinafter described.

These last-named operations are, of course, to prevent the opening of the door by unauthorized persons unfamiliar with the combination of numbers on the disks HSW-- and 4lrequired to be registered with each other and with the index H45- on the plate -l- For examplel assuming that the graduated disks --36- and 41- have been set .so that their graduations -elOM and 90- are brought into diametri al alinement with the slots 14M of the disks 230- and -34- respectively, then it will be necessary to register both of these graduations 4U- and -90- with the fixed index -45- in order to bring` the slots -l4- into registration with the lug -22- to allow the opening of the bolt -15- by the turning` of the shaft flthrough the medium of its handle -1l-.
Under this setting of the graduation members M536- and 4 lif they are not registered with each other or either or both of them are not registered with the index 45- the slots 45twill not be registered with the lug -22- and, therefore, the plate -2()- cannot be operated to unlock the bolt -l5- by the turning of the handle -l1-.
lVhenever it becomes necessary or desirable to change the combinations on the disks -3t3- and -41- it may be readily done by temporarily removing the handle lland knurled nuts of the handles -35- and -40- and then readjusting the graduation members -36- and 41- to produce any other combinations of graduations within the range of the numbers of said disks.
'Vhat I claim is l. The combination with a door having a lock-receiving recess and a casing having a keeper for the lock, of relatively rotatable coaxial shaft sections extending through registering openings in the door and across the recess therein and telescoping with each other within the recess, said shaft sections having their outer ends provided with handles for rotating the same, a bolt mounted on the door and movable into and out of engagement with the keeper and normally spring-pressed into engagement with said keeper, means actuated by the turning movement of one of said shaft sections for withdrawing the bolt from its locking position, a bolt-operating plate admenace jacent the bolt within said recess, means actuated by the turning movement of the other shaft section for actuating the bolt-operating plate to withdraw the bolt from its locking position independently of the operation of the first-named shaft section, a disk within said recess and adjacent the bolt-operating plate and adjustable rotarily about the axis of the second-named shaft section relatively thereto, a lug on the bolt-operating plate extending across the periphery of the disk, said disk having a slot extending inwardly from the periphery thereof and movable therewith into and out of registration with said lug for controlling the operation of the boltoperating plate and preventing the turning movement of the second-named shaft section when the slot is out of registration with the lug.
2. In a door lock of the character described, the combination with a door, relatively rotatable coaxial shaft sections extending through registering openings in the inner and outer sides of the door respectively in telescopic relation, a handle on the inner end of the inner shaft section for turning the same, an additional handle on the outer end of the outer .shaft section for turning the same, a bolt slidable transversely of the axis of said shaft sections and extending beyond opposite sides thereof, arms secured to and projecting laterally from opposite sides of the inner shaft section for engaging and withdrawing the bolt from its locking position as the inner shaft section is turned about its axis, a boltoperating plate movable lengthwise of the bolt and provided with .means for engaging and withdrawing the bolt from its locking position when moved in one direction, means actuated by the turning movement of the outer shaft section for actuating the boltoperating plate, a sleeve surrounding the outer shaft section coaxial therewith and -rotatable relatively thereto, an additional sleeve surrounding the first-named sleeve coaxial therewith and rotatable relatively thereto, a disk secured to the first-named sleeve to rotate therewith, an additional disk secured to the second-named sleeve to rot-ate therewith, separate devices on the outer ends of the sleeves for rotating the same and a lug on the bolt-operating member extending across the peripheries of both of the disks, said disks having slots extending inwardly from the peripheries thereof and movable into and out of registration with said lug to permit the lugs to enter the slots for withdrawing the bolt from its locking position when the bolt-operating plate is operated by the turning movement of the outer shaft section. i
