command-en"lemma AND ALARM. j 1 1" Application filed November 23-, 1926. sieriallloi Q,i 5;
The present invention relatesyto-improvements in combined door'fasteners'and' alarms,
and has for its main objectto provide a latch f tener arrangement provided with an appropriate alarm feature.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide adevice which is simple in construction" and capable of manufactureon a commerc al scale, or in other words one which is not 'so diflicult to produce as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such a'contrivance.
Withthese and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claim and illus trated in'the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes maybe made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages'of the invention. 1
One of the many possible embodlments of the invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which:-
' Figure 1 is-a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the. present invention, applied to the door and door jamb,
the latter two elements being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of'the keeper associated with the latch bolt, in combination with the alarm device; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the latch casingand latch bolt. i V
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates one of the side .posts of a door frame and the numeral 11 a door, hinged in the usual. manner to the opposite side post of the door frame. A lock of any. suitable construction,
not shoWn, may be provided for securing the door bothfrom the inside and outside.
F or the purpose of securing the door from V the inside againstforcible entry, a sliding latch bolt 12 is mounted within a latch casing 13, the latter being fastened by screws 14, or otherwise, to the, inner face of the door tudinal axis of the bolt 12 in its closed position. The width of the slot that it permits the door to ad'jacentitsfree,vertical edge 15. Thelatch cas1ng-1sprov1dedwltha longitudinal slot 16,-having in each of-its ends notches 17, with which is adapted to: co-operate a knob 18 on open and closing positionsgT'he bolt, 12 00- operates with akeeper 19, the latter being in the form of a bracket provided with two flanges 20 and 21, whichextendat right angles to one another. The flange 20 abuts against the inner face 2201' the side member 10 of the door frame, 2
while the flange 2lis I the latch bolt, for holding the-flatter inIits disposed within a mortise 23 in that side face of the frame member 10, which is adjacent the free vertical edge 15 of the'door 11. In the racket is provided a horizontal slot 24, which extends at right angles to the longi-- when the a door is is of a size to accommodate the bolt 12, while its length exceeds considerably the size of the diameter of said bolt; The inner edge '25 of the slot is so dispos'edth'at itpermits the bolt to be thrown to securingposition when the door is closed, and the slot is of such length be partly opened,
with the bolt in its projected position] On the bracket is mounted by screws 26, or otherif wise,the base of a rotary bell 27, containing a suitable mechanism,
such as a hammer actu l s ating device therefor, whereby, when the bell is released" and allowed to be revolved by the usualspring, the bell is sounded. On the bell base is mounted a plungertrip28, which,
at right angles to the inner face 22 of the side member v10 of the door frame, its head 29 when pressed toward the center of the bell,
releases the mechanism and causesthe bell to be sounded. This plunger trip is disposed;
facing the inner face of said side frame mem- 1 v ber and projecting toward the latter to a distance that it comes into contact withthe outer end of the bolt 12 before thelatter strikes against the outer edge 30 of the slot, 24. In gther words, the h'ead29 is in the path of the olt ing position with the bolt projected into the slot 24:,
The operation of the combined door, fastener and alarm is as follows: When the door is to be secured against forcible entry, the
bolt; 12 is projected into the slot .24; in the bracket 19 and secured in such position by seating the knob 18, in one of the inner 12 when the door is swung toward opennotchesl? in the bolt casing. [If then the door is opened to a slight degree, the outer i ected,
end of the latchbolt abuts a ainst the outer edge 30 of the slot 24 in the racket19, preventing the door from being opened further. At the same time the bolt 12 strikes against the plunger trip 28, whereby the bell is at once operated, giving analarm.
What we claim is:
The combination with a door frame'and a door hinged thereto, of a longitudinally shiftable latch bolt on said door, a keeper on said frame provided with a horizontal slot through which said bolt is adapted to be prosaid bolt engaging in its projected position the inner edge of said slot when said door is in its closed position, said slot permitting of a limited opening of said door when said bolt is projected into said slot, a bell mounted upon said kee r, and releasing means for said bell inclu ing a shiftable lunger trip provided with a head, said head acing the inner face of said door frame and projecting beyond the outer edge of said slot whereby said bolt is adapted to contact with said head before it strikes against the outer ed .ofisaidslot. a a l at New York, in the county of New York, and: State of New York, this 5th day ofNovember, A.
