This inventionl relates to a combined pen support, calendar and receptacle, vand has for one of its objects the provision of a desk article which will serve the purpose of a pen or pencil holder, a perpetual calendar and a receptaclefor cigarettes or other artic-les.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a desk set which shall be attractivein appearance, convenient in use, and of improved construction and operation.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description. e
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specilication, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. j

The desk setcomprises a housing ymember v 1() which maybe made of sheet metal or othery suitablematerial and which is provided with an arcuate ori semi-cylindrical cover 11 hingedat 12 to the base portion 10.v Theend walls of the base carry laterally extending sleeves or collars 13 `which pivotally Vsupport pen or pencil sockets 14. The sockets 14 are provided with j ournalsv 15 rotatably mounted within the bearing collars 13 and held in place by retainer plates 16 secured to the ends of the journals 15 by screws 17. The journals 15 are transversely perforated to receive springs 18 and detent balls 19. A

The inner face of the collar 13 is provided with spaced depressions 21 which are engaged by the ball 19 to retain the sockets 14 in different angular positions, as indicated in Fig. 3. in full lines in'Fig. 3 is the operative position in'which the pen or pencil is normally held. lVhen it is desired to place the'set in a drawer or othershallow receptacle, the socket member 14 may be moved to the broken line position shown in Fig. A3. Inthis position the end of the pen or pencil will be lowered to a point no higher than the top of the cover 11,7but the pen will remain in inclined position so that the ink will gravitate toward the point of the pen. Two sockets are shown, one at each endof the set. These may be used for pens having different colored inks, or one may be used for a pen and thek other for a pencil. f f
An adj ustable calendar is supported withinthe cover 11 and is mounted on a framec-omprising endpba-rs 22 and cross-bars 23 and 24. The bars 22 are widened at their forward ends,'as indicated'at 25, and carry a shaft 26 having the ends supported in the enlarged portions 25. Character wheels 27, 28, 29 and 30 are journaled onthe shaft 26 and veach wheel has a pinion 31 Xed thereto. Rearwardly extending shaft-s 32 are 'journaled in the cross-bars 23 and 24 and each shaft carries a pinion 33 which `meshes with one of the pinions 31. Knurled knobs or fingerpieces 34 are threaded on the endsy of the shafts 32 so that by rotating the fingerfpieces' the character Lwheels 27, 28, 29 and 30 may be adjusted. These wheels carry suitable characters for indicating months of the year, days of the month, and days of the week, respectively. It will be apparent that byv properly adjusting the knobs 34, the calendar formed by thefcharacter wheels may be setto indi-V cate any vdesired dat-e. y

A receptacle 40 which may be of glass or other suitable material is placed Within the base 'l0 and may be used 'for holding cigarettes or any other articles, desired.
That the adjustable calendar is removably mounted in the cover 11 may be more readily understood by referring to Figs. 6 and 7. The frame of the adjustable calendar comprises end bars 22 and cross-bars 23 and 24 permanently connected together' at 4l. into one rigid trame. The end bars 22 are provided with screw-threaded openings for rcceiving the screws 42 and 43 which are inserted through holes or perforations in the end Walls of the cover 11. The knobs 34 are screw-threaded onto the ends of the shafts 32 which project through openings or perforations in the rear of the cover 1l, as shown lin Figs. 1 and 4. By unscrewing the knobs 34 from the ends of the shafts 32 and removing the screws 42 and 43, the adjustable calendar may be entirely removed from the cover Whenever desired.
It should also be understood that the closure plate 36 is provided with upwardly projecting ears 37 at the opposite ends thereof, preferably in a diagonal relation as shown in Fig. 3. The ears 37 are adapted to t into rectangular recesses as illustratedat- 44 in Fig. 7 and are provided with screw-threaded openings to receive the screw 43. One of the ears 37 occupies the position shown in Fig. 6 and the other ear 37 Will be located at the other end of the closure plate 36 but opposite the screw 42 shown in Fig. 6 so as to have the dia onal relation illustrated in Fig. 3. lt Wil thus be seen that When the calendar frame is adjusted in position in the cover 11 Where the screw-threaded openings in the end bars 22 and in the ears 37 will register with the openings or perforations in the end walls of the cover 11, the screws 42 and 43 may be used to secure in position not only the adjustable calendar, but also the closure plate 36. After thus assembling the mechanism in its operating position the knobs 34 may be screwed back into place and used for turning the various wheels shown.
I claim 1. In combination, a receptacle, an arched cover for said receptacle, a frame removably held within said cover, a shaft mounted in said frame, character Wheels separately journaled on said shaft, spindles geared to said character wheels and extending through said cover to points outside of said cover, and
.linger-pieces mounted on the outer ends of said spindles for rotating said character wheels.
2. ln combination, a receptacle, a cover :for said receptacle having a recess therein, a frame removably mounted in said recess, character wheels journaled in said frame, said cover having openings therein for eX- posing portions of the peripheries of said character wheels, spindles Jfor rotatinvr said character wheels, linger-pieces secured to said spindles outside of said cover, and a closure plate tor the recess in said cover.
3. In combination, a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a recess therein, a rigid frame structure mounted in said recess, and a plurality of adjustable indicators mounted on said frame in said recess Vin position to be visible through openings in said cover.
`4. In combination, a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a recess therein, a iframe, indicator Wheels carried by said frame, and means tor securing said frame to said cover with portions of said indicator Wheels visible through openings in said cover.
5. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor having a recesstherein, a frame, a shaft mounted in said frame, indicator Wheels mounted on said shaft, means comprising spindles mounted in said frame for separately rotating said Wheels, said spindles extending from said frame through openings in said cover, and finger-pieces mounted on said spindles outside of said cover for adjusting said ,indicator Wheels.
6. In combination, an arched coverfor a receptacle, a frame structure, character Wheels journaled in said frame, means mounted in said frame for rotating the character Wheels, and means for securing said frame with said wheels and rotating means thereon as a separateunit to said cover in position to cause the characters on said Wheels to appear through openings in said cover.
7. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor, an indicator unit comprising a frame with character Wheels mounted therein and means for operating the same, and means for securing such unit to said cover with the characters on the wheels appearing through openings in the cover.
8. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor, an indicator unit comprising character wheels, a closure plate for conlining said unit within a recess in said cover, and common means for securing both said unit and said closure plate to said cover.
9. In combination, a. receptacle, a cover for said receptacle, an indicator unit comprising a frame With character Wheels journaled therein with spindles geared thereto and adapted to extend through holes in the cover,
to points outside of the cover, finger-pieces adapted to be connected to the outer ends of said spindles for rotating `said character Wheels, and means'for securing said unit in a 'openings in said cover, means for rotating said character Wheels from outside the cover, and a removable closure plate With a recess in said cover to co-act with said cover to entirely enclose said unit.`
