STRMGHTEDGE VFoiev 'WALL-PAPER rRIMMERs. l Y 1 My invention relatesto straightedges for wall papertrimmers,vit more particililarlyrelati-ng to a wooden straight edge` having its side edges reinforce'dby metallic channels.

, Fig. 2 is a section on the line ca of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section but showing a slight modification. j y' y Fig. 4: is avertical-section of an apparatus p which I employ for carrying out of applying the inetal channels. n

Fig. 6 isa planview ofthe supporting v` tableofthe apparatus.' A ,y y v In Figs. 1, 2 and 'there'isillustrated. a straight edgev equipped with the improved metal channels, this,` straight edge being one which is particularly intended for use in'confor trimming wall papery nectionfwith cutters The wooden portion of the straight edge -is indicated at land it isusual to provide the sides ofthe wooden strip with metal channels,
one of which is 'used solelyfor 'reinforcing purposes, while the other is employed tore.- inforce and also to' provide an overhanging reinforcing purposesis the one indicated at the left in Fig. 2 and consists of an inter`. mediate portion 2 and top and bottom'angularly extending legs 3 ande. The other channel is shown at the right in Fig. 2 and consistsofan intermediate portion 5 with top and bottom angular legs 6 and 7. This latter i channel is in all respects lilethe other chan# nel with the exception that the leg 6 is longer than the leg 3 and overhangs a` groove 8 formed in the upper sur-face of the straight edge so as to provide a Hange which receives straight edge by screws which were inserted the grooved portion ofthe gage of a paper trimmer to guide the trimmer on the straight edge. Y v
It hasbeen the usual practice to secure these channel members to the. wood of the through the intermediate portions ofthe channel, with the consequent disadvantage ting disk of the trimmerl to the method;
" y straight edge ,and channels/c clamped in the groove.
, integral with thetabl I to any'suitable reciprocating mechanism rro THE RIDGELY rniivirinn that thescrews worked loo-se, causing ythecutfrequently strike the heads ofthe screws, sharpening ofthe cuttingydisk. To overy come lthis diliiculty as well astoprovide an necessitating vrey arrangement whereby the channels'may be v more easily, quickly and cheaplyapp'lied, I n
vhave devised the following arrangement.: i
The channels are first placedupon the sides-f I of the straight edge and the straightedge and channels laid in `a grooveorr the upper surward, a metal iillerstrip 9.being`placed on yport the intermediate portion of the straight" face of a vtable 9`witli theirupperfaces downf., i
edge. The groove ofthe -tablehas a lixed side y10 and an adjustable side 11;V so that the an be 4firmly justed to position against the side'of the The Iside 11 is ad-L straight edgeby a, series -of screws12whichfl are threaded in a rib 13 preferablyformedo-f the table has" aY kpair of V-shapedribs ,14, which l'are slidably mounted in corresponde.y Theunder surface i so `ingly shaped grooves in the stationary sup-A ports15, and the table has al downwardly eX-v tending tongue 16 which may be connected shown) to reciprocate the table. vMounted in (notlll suitable bearings 17 above the table is a shaft 18 Whichhas a pair of beveled rolls 19 so positioned that as the table reciprocates the rolls; will engage the lower legsV 4t and'7 to bend the legs. at an acute .angle tothe interforce the legs into the wood.A rI he bearings ioo forced into the wood. Thereis alsopretv erably employed another roll V25 with Va straight periphery, this roll vbeing "mounted on a shaft 26 journaled in hearings27.carried f j by arms 28, with screws 29 in'blocks '30 to sejcure thefproper adjustment. This roll precedes therolls` 19 and pressesthe `straight edge and channel table. Y
By this arrangement, a very simple, efecyfirmlyv toftheir seats'on the i tive and economical method is employed for securing the metal channel to the sides of the straight edge, eliminating fastening devices such as screws which. are inserted in the intermediate portions of the channel so that there will be no danger of the cutter of the tool Which runs on the channel having the overhanging flange being dulled or nicked by contact with the heads of loose screws.
It may be desirable however to employ in connection with the metal channel which has the overhanging flange, additional fastening ber provided'with a `longitudinal groove on` its upper surface Vadjacent one side edge thereof, a channel-shaped metallic strip aplied to said adjacent edge of said non-metalic member `with the legs of said channel embracing the surfaces of said member, with the lower leg of said channel strip bent inwardly toward the `other leg so as to 'imbed it in saidmember, and the upper leg arranged in parallel relation to the adjacent surface of said member and extending part Way over said groove. Y
2. The combination in a straight edge for Wall paper trimmers, of a non-metallic member provided with a longitudinal. groove ou its upper-surface adjacent one side edge thereof, a channel-shaped metallic strip applied to said adjacent edge of said non-metallic member with the legs of said channel embracing' the surfaces of said member, with the lower leg of said channel strip bent inwardly toward the other leg so as to imbed it in said member, and the upper leg arranged in parallel relation to the adjacent surface of said member and extending part Way over said groove, i and connecting devices passing through the said nonmetallic member and connecting said legs together.
3. In a' straight edge, a non-metallic body member provided With a longitudinal groove on its upper surface adjacent oneside edge thereof, a channel shaped metallic member applied to each of thesides of said nonmetallic member with the legs of the channel closely embracing the surfaces of the straight edge, the upper leg of one of the channels extending part Way over said groove, the under leg of each channel being bent inwardly toward the other leg to imbed the same in the material of the straight edge.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of August, 1927.
CHARLES n. GALVIN.
