An object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for a latch, particularly adapted for use on barn and garage doors.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for a strike for latches.
A further object of this inirention is to provide an improved latch adapted to be mounted on and operated with a swnging or sliding lo door. i
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved means of mounting a lifting device for a latch.
Our invention consists in the construction,
w arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which-- i Figure 1 is an outside elevation illustrating 2G' the construction and mounting of the complete'd'evice as for practical use. Figure is a side elevation of the same, partly in section on the indicated line 2-.fl2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a partial horizontal section on the in- '25 dicatedline 3-3 of Figure 1, the latch member and lifting device particularly being shown in full lines. Figure 11 is a Vertical .section on the indicated line H of Figure 1. Figure 5 is an elevation at the inner face of the door, partly in section on the indicated line 5-5 of lfigure a. Figure 6 isa front elevation showing the base plate and latch membei' detached from the door, the latch member being turned through an are relative to the base plate to reveal otherwise hidden construction. Figure 7 is an end elevation of an angle plate adapted to'be mounted on a door. Figure 8 is an end elevation of a strike adapted to be mounted on a wall or jamb adj acent a door. Figures9 and 10 are elevations, at right angles to each other, of a hold-back strike adapted to be vmounted on a support such as a wall and spaced from a doorway. Figure 11 is a plan of the device shown in Figures 9 and 10.
This specification and the drawing `referred to therein contain someof the elements illustrated, and described in the companion application of John J. McCulloch, and the inventions of both applications are owned by said McGulloch and Silas C. Sweet jointly, hence no interference is desired between the claims thereof.
In the construction of the device as shown the numeral 10 designates a base plate, which is formed with a recurved hook 11 on one end and holes 12 adapted to receive screws whereby it may be secured to a door 13.l A latch member 18tis adapted to be pivoted at one end on one end portion of the base plate 10, preferably by a screw lzextending freely through registering holes in the plate and latch member. The free end portion of the latch member 111 is adapted to be received within the hook 11 and is formedwith notches 16, 17 in opposite margins Vand a truncated arrowshaped extremity outside said notches. The base plate 10 also is formed with a rectangular opening 18 between the holes 12 and screw 15 and the length of said opening preferably is transversely ,of the plate. The latch member let also is formed with a slot 19 arranged longitudinally thereof and adapted to overlie a portion of the opening 18 and overlap at one end on the plate 10 at one side of said opening, the length of said slot being greater than the width of said opening. A` hole 20 is formed in the door 13 and registers with the opening 18 in the base plate. A door-pull or handle 21 is mounted on the inner face of the door 13, after the other parts are assembled and the uppermost ear 22 thereof extends across the inner end of the hole 20 and is formed with a slot 23 arranged transversely of said hole and registering therewith. A lift 211 is formed of a bar of metal bent substantially at right angles near its center to produce a handle portion 25 on one end. The lift 24: is adapted to eXtend through and fit loosely in the slots 19 and 23 and eXtend through the hole 20. The lift is of greater width-than the opening 18 and is formed with a noteh 20 in one margin adapted to receive and pivot the lift on the plate 10 at one side or wall of the opening. In assembling the parts, the lift is turned with its handle portion 25 in horizontal position and passed through the opening 18 andhole 20 before the door-pull 21 is placed in position, and then is turned into Vertical position as shown so that the notch 26 will receive the adj acent wall of said opening. This is done after the plate 10 is mounted on the door and before the latch member 1a is brought into contact with the plate. The latch member is mounted on the lift member and the latter may be oscillated in the opening 18 enough to permit said latch member to be placed against the plate, with one end thereof within the hook 11, before the screw 15 is placed to connect them. The handle portion 25 depends outside of the door 13 and is spaced therefrom for convenience in grasping and the lower end portion thereof is bent inwardly and normally contacts with the door. A clip 2'? is mounted on the outer face of the door 13 and loosely coniines the lower end portion of the handle 25, permitting oscillation thereof relative to the door. The base plate 10 is so mounted that its hooked end portion extends across the adjacent edge of the door, and an angle plate 28 is mounted on the outer facel of the door and is formed with an outstanding ear 29 substantially flush with the edge, which ear is formed with notches 30 and 31 in its upper and lower margins and a hol-e 32 in its body adapted to receive a padlock, not shown. [i strike 33 is mounted in or on and substantially flush with the amb of the doorway and projects outwardly therefrom. rl`he strike 33 is forined with notches 35, 36 in its upper and lower margins adapted to register at times f ith the notches 30 and 31 of the angle plate 23 and the uppermost of said not-ches (dependent on the arrangement of the latch for right or left opening of the door) are adapted to receive the latch member 14 and engage and retain the same. rllhe notch 17 or the notch 16 dependent on the arrangement as to right or left opening of the door) embraces the ear 29 and strike 33 and limits longitudinal movement of the door when it is slidingly mounted. The strike 33 is formed with inclined marginal portions 3,, 38 adapted to engage and lift the base plate 10, and latch member 14 at times, when the door is mounted for swinging relative to the amb. rl`he strike 33 also is formed with a hole 39 in its body adapted to register with the hole 32 in the angle plate 28 and receiv a padlock, not shown. A guard 40 is formed integral with the outer end of the strike 33 and eXtends obliquely therefrom and is adapted to be secured by a screw 41 to a wall 42 of which the amb 34 forms a part. The guard prevents catching of harness, curtains, clothing and the like on the strike 33 and also serves as a brace for said strike. rl`he lift member extends both in front and at the rear of the door 13 and is adapted to be manipulated, by outward pull on the handle portion 25 of thumb pressure on its inner end, to oscillate itand cause it to lift the latch member 14 outof engagement with the strike 33. En any osoillation the lift member fulcrums on the lower margin of the slot 23 in the car 22 and has suflicient mov-ement to raise the latch member by engagement wit1 the upper margin of the slot 19. Ordinarily the latch member ser-.ts by gravity after any manipulation thereof in use.. In' the event of an accumulation of frost, snow or ice tending to stick the latch member in open position, it can be released by opposite operation of the handle member 25 or of the inner end portion of the lift member. 'Vhen the device is in 'a lift member latched position, the door being either swinging or sliding relative to the wall, the outer end portion of the base plate rides on a shoulder 43 of the strike 33 and supports the door against sagging. A hold-back strike is formed of an angular bar of metal (Figs. 9, 10, 11) having a-base fiange 44 provided with notches 45, opening through its lower margin and adapted to receive screws whereby it may be fastened to a wall back of the door way, when the door is hinged for swinging, in substantially the .same horizontal plane as the strike 33. rfhe outstanding fiange 47 is formed with a notch 48 in its upper margin adapted to receive the latch member 14 when the door is open, a shoulder 49 receiving and supporting the latch plate 10 when the door is open and preventing sagging thereof and an inclined margin 46 outside said shoulder ac apted to receive and guide the base plate to its seat and raise. the door slightly if it is sagged. The latch member 14 and base plate 10 may be inverted longitudinally for use on a door opening oppositely to that shown, in which event the strike 33 would be mounted on the opposite jamb (not shown). The depending handle portion 25 of the lift 24 may serve as a door-pull, the pullin'g strain applied thereto being communicated to the door through the clip 27 and through engagement of the lift by its notch 26 with the base plate 10.
We claim as our invention l. A barn and garage door. latch, comprising a base plate formed with an opening and a curved, overlapping end portion, a latch plate pivoted on said base plate and formed with a sloteiitending across said opening at times, one end of said latch being received under said overlapping end portion, a lift member extending through said opening and slot and arranged for oscillation therein, and a handle integral with said lift member and depending from one end portion thereof.
2. A barn and garage door latch, comprising a base plate formed with an opening and a Curved, overlapping end portion, a latch member pivoted on said base plate and fornied with a slot extending across said opening at times, one end of said latch being received under said overlapping end portion,
extending through said opening and slot and arranged for oscillation therein, a handle integral with said lift and depending from one end port-ion thereof, and a clip adapted to embrace and limit arcuate movement of said handle.
