Description

I A. CYR.
- cAR-covPLwa.
Pate nted No'v. 2, 1875.
N. PETERS, FHOTQLITHOGR'PHER. WASHINGTON, n c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUBIN GYR, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [69,424, dated November 2, 1875 application filed October 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUBIN OYR, of Lowell, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a vertical and longitudinal section, Fig. 4; a horizontal and longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 a frontend view, of a drawbar provided with such coupling.
My invention relates to means of coupling the connecting-link, and of supporting it in position for coupling, and allowing it to play laterally, as occasion may require.
In the drawings A denotes the drawbar of a railway-carriage, there being within its linkreceiving chamber B a slide, 0. provided with one or more springs, D, for forcing it forward and underneath the link-pin hole at, extending down throughv the top of the bar.
Preparatory to coupling the draw-bar with a link the coupling'pin b is to be placed in the hole a, so as to rest on the slide. The slide being forced back by the link, the pin will fall into and through the latter.
In connection with the above-described devices I use four jaws, E E F F, arranged at the mouth of the draw-bar, those of one pair being at right angles with those of the other. Each jaw is fixed to a pair of springs, G G, extending backward from it, and fastened to the draw-bar. The springs allow their pair of jaws to play or move apart, and force them together and upon the link, so as to keep it in a position for coupling with another draw-bar. The jaws allow of play of the link laterally, or up or down, as occasion may require, while it may be coupled to two draw-bars. The outer jaws lap over the inner ones.
I claim The draw-bar provided with the four jaws E E F F and the springs G, and with the couplingslide O and its spring or springs D, all arranged in manner and to operate as specified.
AUBIN OYR.
