G.BL YTHE.
GAR COUPLING. I
No. 296,665. Patented Apr. 8,1884;
part thereof.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,665, dated April 8, 1884,
Application filed January 30, 1834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEO. BLYTHE, of Chillicothe, county of Livingston and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare-that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, which willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide means to couple cars without danger to the person coupling them; second, to uncouple the cars with the least possible trouble. I attain these objects by the mechanism sh own in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing my invention in use, the couplingpin being down. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my invention.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts in all the views.
A is an inclined table hollowed in the middle to guide the approaching link, and poised in front of the draw-head in such a manner as to be pushed down and out of the way to prevent its being jammed.
B B are lever-arms attached to the inclined table and to the front of the car in any suitable place.
O C are suspenders attached to the leverarms and the bail D.
D is a bail fastened firmly to the coupling pin rod E by means of a set-screw, so as to allow of adjustment.
E is a rod having at its lower end a coupling-pin, F, also the bails D and G, and its upper end moving in a slot.
F is a coupling-pin moving through the draw-head H.
G is a bail at the upper part of the rod E, having a set-screw for the purpose of regulating the rise of the rod.
H is a draw-head having holes orslots in the top and bottom for the pin F to pass through.
I I are pulleys, carrying the chain K.
K is a chain attached to the bail D in the manner shown; also the pendants K K.
K K are pendants attached to the chain .K and passing to the sides are fastened there,
for the purpose hereinafter described and claimed.
When desired to operate the invention, the chain K (or pendants K K) is pulled, and thereby raises the rod E and the table A by means of the suspenders O 0. As the car to be coupled approaches, the link it carries is received upon and guided by the table A into the draw-head H, and as the table A is forced backward by the collision the coupling-pin, by means of the suspenders O O, is made to engage the link, thus fastening the cars together. To uncouple the car while on the ground you pull the chain K, attached to the pin,and release the link. If on top of car,the pendant K is used.
Now having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of the incline table A, having the lever-arms B, the suspenders 0, attached to the bail D, and the pin F, substantiall y as and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. The chain K and pendants K K, for the purpose substantially as set forth. 3. The pin F, set in the guide-bar E, which moves in frame L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of the inclined table A, lever-arms B B, suspenders O G, coupling-pin F, chain K, and pendants K K, substantially as set forth.
5. The bail D, having downward-pending eyelets on either side, and an npwardpending one on the rear side, provided in front with a. set-screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
6. The combination of the pin F, bar E, bail D, pendants K and K, pulleys I I, with table A, lever-arms B, and suspenders 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing Iappend my signature.
GEORGE BLYTHE. Witnesses.
G. B. J. MGINTRUFF, R. BARNEY.
