ATTACHMENT :i-ACE PLATES.
A man filed my 13, 1925. seriai Noi 43,281.-
My invention relates to attachment'of preciousmetal face plates on pocket knives and other pieces of c-utlerysuch as paper knives an'dl etter openers'where it is desired to providea handle formed witha cover of precious metal suchasgold, silver or other material, when it is desired to attach'the face plate to aold the'saine firmly seem-ea to provide a very attractive handle whichcan be decorated on the surface of the same. I
A} feature of the invention resides inthe attachment of precious metal face plates to the sides of a knife Without penetrating 7 through the face plate with a rivet, yet 'securely attachingthe face plateto the handle or sidesof the knife. a
It is also a feature of my invention toprovide means of attaching faceplates-which permits theface plates to be engraved or decorated on the surface andwithout requiring any soldering or riveting" means whichwill mar the face plates. It isquite important in the manufactureof articles'fof cutlery where it is desired to provide a face plate of precious metal toh'ave means for attaching the plate to the sides of the article of cutlery and overth'e' edges of .the same so that the "sides of theknife or articles of cutlery, which are usually formed ofbrass or other cheaper material which'are not desirableto be exposed, are thus completely covered, forming a handle with a jcovering or face plate of metal to'make a very attractive article of cutlery.
I It is also a feature of my; invention to provide a paper knife having spring means formed integral with the knife blade extend- Iing in between the sides of the handle of the knife and being pivotall adapted, with one 7 endf ree, to form the sprmgimember adapted to hold a knife blade in open or closedposition, projecting from or concealed within the handle of the knife so that it is not necessary to provide an extra springme'mber between siveto usegold or silver rivets, or rivets which thesides of the handle but the blade of the paper knifeis extended and forms this spring means within thesidesof thehandle.
Heretofore these plates have: been secured by rivets which is undesirable because they must pass'through thesides and be exposed to the outside of theiplate. It istveryexpenwould conform with the precious metal forming the cover and side plates and it is obvious that itis not practical touse this means of construction by reason of the softness of the material and undesirable results eventuating from such use of precious metal for the retaining pins or rivets to hold the sides of the handle to'the knife. These pins orrivets are used to hold the plates on'the knife,-or article of cutlery, and in sofdoing theymust be strong and durable to permit use -without appreciable wear. Soldering means have also been used to attachthese plates to'thesides of the cutlery and this 1s unsatisfactory as the acid cutlery which is very desirable. r
' These features together with other details of constructionwvill be norefully' and extensively pointed out in the specification and ClaiIIIS.
specifications: I a Figure 1 is a side view of'a paperor letter opener knife with a knife blade formed in the handle.
If Figure 2-is a side 'view of a pocket kinife illustrating my invention;
, 'Figure 3 is'a section on the line 3 -3 of Figure Figure A is a section on the line 44 of Figure 2. I Figure 5 illustrates the side plates'of pre- In the drawings forming part of these attachment for faceplates on an article of cious metal, the filler member 'an-d one of the sides 1n separated position; from the knife or article of- 'cutlery showing relative consecutive position in perspective; f. 1
;F"gure 6' is" a section on the line of Figure 5 in the drawings. 1
Figure- Tis a section onthe line of Figure 5 in-the drawings.
, Myinvention relates to means of attaching the preciousmetal side plate A to an'article of cutlery,such as paper knife B or pocket knife (Lillustratecl in the drawings;
7 The side face platesA have their'body portion 10 formed of precious metal, such "as gold, silver or-other suitable precious metal, either in their entirety, throughout the thickness of the same, or of a1 plated or filledna ture, so that. the outer surface which \Vlll'be metal handles and a steel blade 20 projecting from the same giving a Wonderful appear-' ance to the finished article;
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the principal formation and construction of the same which I have shown in one format-ionin my drawings and I desire to have it understood'that these are only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
I claim :1
1. Face plate attaching means for articles of cutlery including bevelled 'edgeside plates,
metal face plates adapted to cover said side plates, and inwardlyturned side walls adapted to engage said bevelled edges to provide a recess to the blade to permit easy withdrawal a of the same. I V
'2. Precious metal side plate attaching means for pocket knives including inwardly bevelled side plates adjacent the blade, precious metal cover plates for said side plates, having a' peripheral'edge turnedover said bevelled edges of said side plates to provide a space which allows access to the blade for opening the knife' 1 3. An article of"cutlery" including base plates, adj acent the blade thereof, inner mar.- ginal bevelled edges on said base plates, a precious metal outside plate having a marginal edge adapted to engage said marginal bevelled edge of said base plate to provide a v marginal recess Whieh permits free access to the blade. v
4:. r A knife including a handle having a base plate, an inwardly inclined marginal edge formed on said base plate, a eover'plate adapted to extend over said base plate and said inwardly inclined marginal edge whereby, ac-
cess to the blade for opening the knife is pro vided.
