With the present putty knife the handle is entirely formed at one side of the plane of the blade so that the putty knife lies entirely fiat with the surface to be scraped, or need only be slightly flexed in order to accomplish an efficient scraping operation.

2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in putty knives.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved putty knife having the handle and blade portions thereof stamped of a single piece of material.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a relatively cheap type of putty knife including a blade and handle of integral formation durably constructed and stamped from a single sheet of material with a single die stamping operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved putty knife.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the improved putty knife.
Figures 3 and 4 are cross sectional views taken substantially on the respective lines shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the improved putty knife which may include a blade portion B and a handle portion C.
As is well known to those skilled in the use of putty knives, they are conventionally formed of a blade portion and a handle which is detachable or not integrally formed with respect to the blade. Difiiculties are very often encountered with the use of such putty knives not only because the handle becomes detached with respect to the blade, but also because puttyknife handles are usually formed with part of the handle at its connection with the blade extending below the lower surface of the blade so that in some cases extreme flexing of the blade is necessary in order to properly perform the scraping operation. With the present putty knife the handle is entirely formed at one side of the plane of the blade so that the putty knife lies entirely fiat with the surface to be scraped, or need only be slightly flexed in order to accomplish an efficient scraping operation.
The blade B includes a flat body portion Hi which may be convexly edged at H and ii, tapering forwardly slightly in a convergent relation and providing a straight scraping edge i3. The handle C is integrally formed with the blade, by means of a single die at a single die stamping operation and it includes a hand grasping portion l5 which at its rear end I6 is formed in the shape of a hollow quarter sphere IS. The handle I5 then tapers forwardly at I! both at its side margins and top margin; the external surface being convex; the taper extending inwardly a short distance along the blade body I0, and being integral therewith. This taper extends to about the point 20 as shown in Figure 1, and therefrom the handle portion is embossed at 21 from the upper surface of the blade, with a uniform cross section; the same terminating at a convex edge 23 which merges into the blade. The entire cavity of the handle and the embossing 2| is exposed at the under surface below the blade, and the handle and embossing are raised from the plane of the blade as shown in Figure 3. The cross section of the embossing 2| is shown at Figure 4; the same including a flat top wall which assists in transversely reinforcing the blade against buckling.
The material of which the scraper is formed may be metal or any approved material, such as plastic.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture a scraping device comprising an integral blade and handle wherein the blade is of flat formation and the handle projects from the top surface of the blade entirely to one side of the plane of the blade, the handle being hollowed throughout the length thereof and defining a recess which is exposed at the under side of the scraper, the handle furthermore having its lower edges beyond the blade lying flush with the plane of the blade.
2. As an article of manufacture a one piece putty knife comprising a blade of flat formation having at the outer end thereof a scraping edge, and an integra1 handle formed with the blade, said handle at its outer end being convexly formed at the top and end surface thereof and therefrom tapering with a transverse convex external surfacing in convergent relation towards the blade and extending integrally along the blade at the longitudinal axis thereof an appreciable distance and merging therewith in an embossing integrally connected with the blade and extending from the upper surface of the blade, said blade at its rear end convergently merging into the contour of the tapered side surfacing of the handle about mid- 3 way between the ends 01' the latter, said handle being entirely hollow and opened at the side thereof flush with the bottom surface of the blade.
