2 Claims.
This invention relates to knives and refers more particularly to a knife handle embodying improved means for providing an ornamental shield or escutcheon plate therefor.
The invention further provides, in a knife handie including an ornamental face plate of bone or any other suitable composition or material and a metallic side plate, a shield or escutcheon plate which is so constructed and incorporated in the handle structure as to insure an effective and lasting association of the same therewith, while avoiding the necessity of riveting or otherwise securing the shield or escutcheon plate to the ornamental face plate, and obi viating the use of securing means, of a character which tends to crack or break the brittle or hard ornamental face plate.
The invention more particularly resides in a knife handle structure of the indicated character which includes a metallic side plate having an offset portion providing a substantially flat outer surface which extends into and is exposed through a correspondingly shaped opening in the ornamental face plate and which completely fills the said opening, with the flat outer face thereof disposed substantially flush with the outer surface of the ornamental face plate.
The invention further comprehends a handle for pocket knives or the like, provided with a shield or escutcheon plate formed integrally with the metallic side plate of the handle which does not materially increase the cost of the knife, and which provides an ornamental shield or escutcheon plate effectually connected to the handle structure.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a pocket knife provided with a shield or escutcheon plate constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a side or bolster plate of the knife handle illustrating the improved form of shield or escutcheon plate.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through the knife structure taken approximately on the line indicated at 3-3 in Fig. 1.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the same is disclosed as applied to the handle of a pocket knife, but it is to be understood that the same may be applied to other types of knives without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the handle which is designated generally 661 by the reference character A includes a bolster or side plate 10, which is usually constructed of metal, and an ornamental face plate which may be constructed of bone or any other suitable composition or material, the face plate being 65. designed to overlie the outer face of the bolster or side plate 16 and being secured thereto in any desired manner.
The invention is particularly directed to means for providing a shield or escutcheon plate 12 which is incorporated in the handle structure in such a manner as to avoid adding materially to the expense of its production, while providing a suflicient and lasting connection therewith and avoiding the necessity of riveting or employing equivalent securing means which tend to crack or break the face plate.
In the embodiment of the invention set forth, the escutcheon plate or shield 12 is formed by offsetting a portion of the bolster or side plate 10 and forming an opening 13 in the face plate 11, which corresponds in size and shape to said offset portion so that it snugly fits therein and completely fills the opening with the outer surface of said ofiset portion 12 disposed in a plane 85, substantially parallel to the plane of the outer surface of the face plate. As specifically shown, the offset portion 12 which defines the shield or escutcheon plate is produced by longitudinal and transverse slits 1a and 15, the latter transverse slits 15 extending in the same direction from opposite ends of the longitudinal slit 1%. This defines a tongue-like portion which is out struck or offset from the bolster or side plate 10.
From the foregoing, it will thus be seen that a handle structure for knives has been devised, by virtue of which a shield or escutcheon plate is inexpensively incorporated therein.
What is claimed is:
1. In a knife, a handle including a metallic 10o side plate having a portion of the body of said plate outwardly struck to define an offset portion disposed in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the side plate and overlying the opening in the body of the side plate from which it is struck and connected therewith along one of its marginal edges, a face plate secured against the outer face of the side plate and provided with an opening extending therethrough of a size and so located as to snugly receive the extending in the same direction at opposite ends of said longitudinal slit, a face plate secured against the outer face of the side plate and provided with an opening to receive therein and to expose therethrough the said offset tongue to provide an escutcheon plate substantially flush with the outer surface of the face plate.
