Description

G. HAMMERSLEY.
FOLDING-BASKET.
Patented Nov. 2, 1875.
I I I llulr Ill 5, jiwe'l N FEI'ERS PHOTO-LITHQGRAPHER WASHINGTON DC.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE HAMMERSLEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
iMPROVEMENT m FOLDING BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,358, dated November 2, 1875; application filed June 8, 1875. V
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAMMERSLEY, of the city of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Folding Basket, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of baskets, the object of which isto enable the several parts of the baskets to be folded together for convenience in transportation and packing. It consists in making the basket-frame with a fixed central foundation, to which the frames of the top, bottom, and sides are hinged, so as to fold down on the central part.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents the basket with part of the frame exposed, and Fig. 2 represents it when folded up.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A represents the foundation, consisting of the end frames at a, connected together at the bottom by the short rods b b, and joined at the top by a rod, 0, on each side. To this central foundation the other parts of the baskets are connected by the hinges It, made by turning the end of the wire around the rod to which it is hinged. The top, bottom, and sides of the basket are made of quadrangular frames of wire, strengthened by the crosspieces d, and covered with willow or other suitable material, as is likewise the foundation part, as shown in the drawing.
In constructing the basket the object sought is to have the top, bottom, and sides fold, so as to be contained within the central foundation. To accomplish this I connect the several parts in the manner following, describing the exposed part of the frame only, the other part, covered with willow being the same in construction and arrangement: The bottom frame B is hinged to one of the rods 12, and the end frame to the bottom B at e e. The sides 8 s are hinged to the frame of the foundation, as at f f, and the top to the rod 0 In folding the basket the end E is folded on the bottom B, and this is folded in the foundation. The sides are then folded down one on the other, and the top is folded over all, and secured by a string, clasp, or other means. When the basket is extended the several parts of the frame are secured together by strings, or in any other suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stationary central foundation A, in com-" bination with the top, bottom, and sides hinged thereto, and the end E hinged to the bottom B, so that the several parts are capable of being folded within the central foundation, substantially as described.
