, O. JUNGHANS MECHANICAL TIME FUSE Filed Jan. 12, 1928 f wauw@ atented Nov. 27, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSKAR JUNGHANS, DECEASED, LATE F SCHRAMIBERG, GERMANY, BY SIEGFRIED JUNG-HANS, ADMINISTRATOR, OF VILLINGEN, BADEN, GERMANY.
MECHANICAL TIME FUSE.
Application led January 12, 1928, Serial No. 246,358, and in Germany January 19, 1927.
According to this invention the mechanicalv means employed for the locking and releasing the timing disk are extremely simple and compact in construction elicient and reliable in operation and highly practical. Generally speaking, the invention comprises a lug or tongue eut from the timing d isk and bent out of the plane of the disk to form a catch engaging a pin provided in the usual fuse cap, and further a hammer constructed and arranged in a manner that, upon the firing of the projectile, the said hammer will act by its weight, owing to the shock received, to bend back the said catch and to thereby release the timing disk from its locked engagement with the pin, so thaty the clockwork can start to rotate. the disk.
It will be seen that a mechanism ol' this kind is not only very simple and ellirient.. but also absolutely reliable` inasi'nuch as exactly at *he moment of tiring the shot the locked parts will be released with certainty, so that the clockwork will start immediately upon the tiring of the shot and the shell vwill explode accurately at the deSired`diStanCe, or the exact moment to which the timing disk has been previously set. c
Proceeding to a detailed description, reference is had to the following specification and drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which fairly fall within .the
true scope of said claims, may be resorted to when4 found expedient.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like characters designate like parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section 55 of the fuse and Figure 2 is a cross-section taken on the line A-B of Figure 1.
Thetiming or setting disk a is fixed to the main spindle b of the clockwork of the fuse 6o in the usual manner. A tongue c is cut in the disk a and bent out of the plane of the latter to form, a lug or catch which is slotted at its free end to form a fork engaging'over the pin e rigidly connected with the'cap d of 65 the fuse. Firmly attached to the inner face of the top of the cap Z is a plate-spring f which carries a weight at its free end shaped. to form a hammer h. The spring f is secured to the cap by means of screws g and the 70 weight or hammer h is secured to the spring by riveting or soldering. As will be seen the hammer is suspended to normally occupy av position over and above the tongue or' lug e projecting from the timing disk ai.V
The operation is asL follows :v
Due to the shock imparted to the projectile atthe firing moment the hammer h will rebound and hit the lug c so that the. latterl will be bent .back into the plane of the disk 80 or at least sutliciently far to be out of engagement with the pin e. `At the very moment this occurs and the timingdisk thus is unlocked the clockwork will automatically start immediately on the firing of the projec- 35r tile.
lVhat is claimed is l. A mechanical time fuse of the charac-- ter set forth, comprising -a clockwork, a cap enclosing said clockwork, a timing or set- 'mer adapted to bring, upon the firing of the shot, the said lug out of locking engagement with the pin.
2. A mechanical time fuse as claimed in claim 1, wherein the lug is shaped to form 5 a forked tongue cut and bent out of the metal of the timing disk and adapted to be bent back towards or into the plane of the disk by the impact of the hammer.
3. A mechanical time fuse as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hammer is suspended to the one end of a, spring the other end of which is firmly attached to the cap.
In testimony whereof I, the said administrator SIEGFRIED JUNGHANS, afix my signature.
