FOLDING COT.
Application filed .Tune 15,
This invention relates to a folding cot, adapted particularly for camping purposes, so constructed that it will fold compactly and may be readily set up or folded. The frame of the cot, which is made of channeled steel, strong and durable, and the channeled parts are so connected that whenthe cot is folded these parts will nest one within the other.
The frame of the cot comprises side rails composed-of channel bars, each bar consisting of a` central` section, the channeled side of which faces .upwardly when the cot is set up, and two pivotally connected end sections having their channeled sides facing downward, when the cot is set up, and adapted to fold within the central section; legs, composed of channel bars, pivoted to the central section and adapted to it over the back of said central section when the legs are folded, links for connecting the ond section of the side rails to the legs and adapted to fold within the side rails; folding tie rods extending between the legs' a;taclied to each side rail and adapted to fold at the sidesof the rail and legs, and folding rods at the ends of the cot which connect the legs at the opposite sides of the cot t0- gether. The invention also comprises novel means for connecting the mattress frame to the cot frame, comprising hooks on the Inattrcss frame which extend into'the channels of the ond sections of the siderails and which are readily detached by collapsing the frame.
In the accompanying drawing, i l is a top plan view of the cot frame as it appears when set up, the mattress frame being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cot, set up; Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section through part of a side bar and leg;
Fig. 4 an end view of the cot, set up,
" 'from lcft to right in Fig. l;
loolrv Y Y 5 is a perspective View of portions of onecorner of the cot frame;
6 is a central vertical longitudinal section through part of a central section of the side bar and through the adjacent end section and leg, showing the same folded; and,
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of part of the side bar, showing a leg and tie rod folded.
Referring to the drawing, a and a indicate side rails of the cot, each composed of channel bars and comprising a relatively long central section l, Vand end sections 2 which are pivoted to the central section near the ends The channeled sides of as shown in F ig. 6. The end sections are,A
made wider near their pivoted ends, as indicated at 2a, so that these end portions will tit closely within the walls of the central sec'- tions, to prevent side play, while kthe remainder of the end sections may be narrower so that they will not frictionally engage the walls of the central sections, thusfacilitating folding and unfolding. The parts 2*'of the end sections may be made Vwider than theremaining partsl by cutting out the back of each section and doubling the sides of the channel bar backward to form a double thickness.
The legs 4 of the cot are `also composed of channel bars, of slightly. greater width than the central sections of the side rails, and each leg has a part of its back portion cut out,
leaving forked arms 4a which fit against theV outer side of the central section of the side rail and which are pivoted at 5 to Said section7 between the end of the section and the pivotal point 3 of the end section 2. The back of the leg bet-Ween the 'forked arms abuts, against the back of the central section of the side rail, when the cot is unfolded,'as shown at 4b, in Fig..2. The back thus forms a stop to limit the Outward spreading of the leg. the legs face inwardly when t-he cot is set up, and when the cot is folded each leg folds around the back and sides of the central section to which it is connected, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
Each leg has a. longitudinal. slot 6 in its back and a pin k7 extends through the side walls of the leg adjacent the slot. c Links 8 are pivotally connected at 9 tothe end sections of the side rails and are adapted `to extend through the slots 6 in the legs Each link has several notches 10, adapted to engage the pin 7, to lock the end section of the side rail to the leg. The links 8 are pivoted within the channels 0f the end sections of the side rails about midway of their lengths.l The wire fabric or mattress 1l is connected to flat end bars 12, each end bar having hooks 13 which are adapted to extend into the chan` vic vnels of the end sections lofthe `side rails,
shown i-ii'Fig. 2. Vrllhus, when the mattress frame is hooked to the end sections of the "side rails,r after .the cot fraine has been set The legs on each side of the vcot are con` nected by folding tie rods each consisting of arelatively long central section-lF d the legs and side rails, as shown in Fie',
end sections 15, which are pivoted to the central sectionrandalso to the pins 7, which ex" tend throughthe legs. Each leg has a stop 16, v'pressed yout froin the oiiter side ofthe',
leg, and this stop prevents the sections 15 vof the tie rod'froni cropping down 1oel w' the horizontal position when the tie vrod is loose or in other words. `helowva line 'oiningf- 7 5 l 1 J 7 of tiie end sections.
the pivotal points These tie rods prevent spreading of the legs longitudinally of the cot. When the otis folded, the parts l5 ofthe tieV rods fo l iip-` wardly alongside of the legs and the` central part 14 folds parallel with the part f 15 and t Y The legs at-opposite sides of thecot freine areconnected by foldingV braces i7 18, as shown in Figs. 1, l1 and 5. rlhese braces are pivotally connect-ed together-at their centers, as shown at19, and have downwardly breaking joints 17l and 18a. Vlien the braces are folded, the legs 'to which they are con nected are drawn together and tli'e'hraces extend substantially parallel with the To fold thefcot, the links or latches 8 are released froin the pins 7 and this perini ts thY end sections 2 of the side rails to inove ahoiit theirV pivotal points.` The mattress 'iraine inay then be removed hy detaching 'the hooks 13 from the ends of the sections 2,1and the latter may hefolded within the central section 1, the latching or locking-.links 8 folding within the side rail, as shcwii 6.
The centialparts 14 of thet-ie rodsA are then moved upwardly and the legs connect-d hy these rods are .swung inwardly overthe h .clrs of the central sections 1 of the siderails, as
shown in Fig. 7. The cross vbraces .17 and 1-8 are then folded by breaking their joints 17aL and 18a downwardly, thus bringing the legs and side rails frein the opposite the cot together and the cross braces then lie sulostantiall iara-llel with the rails and legs.
Y i e In settin'ou :i the cot these onera-.ions are reversed and when the fabric liasheen connected to the end Vsections of the side rails, a'-
downward pressure on said end vsections will stretch the fabric taut and the links 8 inay then bevhooked over the pins to lhold it taut.
