Description

Nov. 27, 1928.
F. GEISSLER CASTING APPARATUS FOR FIRST QUALITY AND REFINED STEELS Filed March 24, 1927 /n uenfor:
Patented Nov. 27, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
FRANZ GEIssnER, o1? nussnnnorw-onnnxnssnn, GERMANY.
Application filed March 24, 1927, Serial No. 178,070, and in Germany December 8, 1925 Thisinvention relates to a castin ratus for first quality and refine When this castingapparatus is used it is no longer necessary to clean and turn off the cast .1 blocks. The liquid mass poured into a funnel flows from below into the ingot molds through tangential channels, a core being arranged at the point at which the liquid mass enters into the ingot mold so that an eddy is =1 produced in the-flow of the liquid mass, all impurities contained in the liquid mass being thus carried up into the head of the block which after solidifying is cut ofi same as the root.
a An embodiment of the invention is shown,
by way of example, in the "accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on line II of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. The casting tube 0 having a funnel shaped orifice a and a lining b of refractory material is standing above a vertical bore d from which channels 6, displaced the one with regard'to 25 the other, extend tangentially and terminate in circular grooves 7 above which the ingot molds 9' stand upon the base plate h. In each circular groove f a core 5 is arranged. The head k of the ingot mold has a lining of re- 30 fractory material. 7
When the liquid metal is poured into the funnel-shaped mouth a it flows through the bore 0?. channels e and grooves 7 into the ingot v steels.
molds g and gradually rises in the same. As
the channels e end tangentially in the grooves 1 f underneath the ingot molds g, a circulating movement is communicated to the liquid mass which, when the mass is rising in the ingot mold, produces an eddy so that all impurities in the mass are thrown up into the top end it of the ingot mold. The head of the cast block can be cut off same as the root so that the cast block is perfectly pure and no cleaning or turning off is necessary, much time and material being thus saved. I
I claim r A casting apparatus for first quality and refined steel comprising in combination, a base plate having a vertical bore at the centre. a pouring tube above said vertical bore, a funnel shaped inlet at the top end of said pouring tube, conical ingot molds on said base plate around said pouring tube, circular grooves in said base plate one under each ingot mold and a channel connecting each circular groove with said vertical bore so' that the point at which said channel terminates in said groove is tangential to said ingot mold so that a circulating movement around thecore formed underneath each ingot is communicated to the liquid mass and the impurities are carried up to the top end of said ingot mold.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FRANZ GEISSLER.
