Description

Nov. 20, 1928. 1,692,772 A J. J. FOLEY SHADE SUPPORT FOR LAMPS 4ffor er Patented Nov. 20, 1928 UNITED. STATES} A PATENT oF lca,
JOHN J. rotar or HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, AssIGNoR To HENRY REUBER, .13.; AND HIMsELr, DOING BUSINESS AS THE ART LAMP AND NOVELTY COMPANY, or
HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT SHADE SUPPORT ron LAMPS.
Application filed September 30, 1927. Serial No. 223,140.
My invention relates to the class of devices employed for supporting shades of vari ous sorts, commonly used in connection with lamps, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a support that shall be simple and inexpensive and also one capable of supporting a shade in a particularly efficient manner.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a lamp with my improved support attached thereto, the shade mounted on the support bein shown in section. V
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the sup port. 7 i
80 Fi re 3 is a view in elevation looking at the edge of the support.
Figure 4 is a top view of the support.
Figure 5 is a view in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 55 of Figure 2.
In the accompanyin drawings the numeral 6 denotes the standard of a lamp more especially of the electric type, and in connection with which my improved device is adapted for use, altho it will be understood that said support is not limited to use with such lamps. A screw threaded stud (not shown) projects from the upper end of the standard in a manner common to devices of this class, this stud bein adapted to receive a lamp 7 that is secured in place by means of interengaging screw threads on the lamp and stud.
My improved support, or harp as it is commonly known in the trade, comprises a base that is formed from sheet metal stamped to shape and including a base plate 8, side parts 9 and sockets 10. This base is formed from a single piece of sheet metal that is properly shaped to provide material to be formed into the sockets 10.
Posts 11 of the support areformed from wire bent to desired shape, this shape preferably including bows 12 with short extensions 13 therefrom to receive the sockets 14 of a top comprising sides 15 and a top plate 16. The
sides 15 are shaped to fit within the lower part of a neck 17 of a shade 18. This shaping of the sides 15 provides a secure seat for the top are formed, and by constructing such bottom and top of sheet metal and providing sockets to receive the posts that are formed from wire a veryinexpensive shade support or harp is obtained that may be sold at a low cost and that, at the same time, most satisfactorily serves the ends for which it is intended.
In the preferred form of construction the posts will generally be secured within the sockets 10 and 14 in any suitable manner, as by spot welding, but it will be understood that this is not absolutely essential to my invention that contemplates a fit between the posts and sockets tight enough to serve this purpose.
It will also be noted that the base and top are duplicates, except for the size of the holes, through the top and base plates, and the posts 11 also bein duplicates the entire support is made up of parts of two forms only.
It will also be noted that the sockets 10 and 1 1 are formed inwardly of the sides of the top and bottom whereby the ends of the posts 11 formed from wire abut against the inwardly extending parts of the top and bottom and consequently limit the distance between said top and bottom after the posts have been cut I for a specific form of harp or support.
In accordance with the'provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the in vention maybe carried out by other means 2 l w 1,692,772 i I f and applied to uses other than those above set parallel s0ckets,p0sts mounted at their endsin out. the sockets and spread apart to providea bulb I claimclearance, a shade having a part thereof 1 A shade support comprisin a top and botmounted on the sides of the top member, and 5 tom member of like construction each having retaining means for theshade engaged with a transverse part and sides together forming a the shade and top member. dish-shaped structure terminating in. spaced 7 JOHN J. FOLEY.
