Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,242, dated October 26, 1875; application filed October 8, 1875.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHYLEMAN A. DOWNER, of Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in VVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of washing-machines for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me, bearing date on April 8, 1873, and numbered 137 ,661, wherein are used two small corrugated rollers, arranged above a large one, and adapted to yield, by means of springs or otherwise, to the bulk of the clothes while being washed. My invention consists in the employment of a catch of a peculiar construction, to prevent both vertical and lateral movement of the frame when attached to the tub, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the lateral, and B the end, bars of the lower frame of my improved washer, the former of which afford bearings for the journals of a large corrugated roller, 0, as shown in Fig. 2. D represents the upper frame, also consisting'of lateral and end bars a b, which is suitably hinged at d to the lower frame, and affords bearings for the journals 6 of two yoke-plates, E, in which are journaled two small corrugated rollers, F F, in such manner that they g, which projects downwardly from end bar Z of the upper frame D, the shank i of which is received between two lugs, 11, projecting inward] y from a metallic plate, j, rigidly secured to the vertical sides of the said tub, when the catch g is caused to vibrate into the position shown in Fig. 3, with its bent end hooked under either of the lugs i.

The large corrugated roller is actuated bymeans ofa crank-arm, I, which may be a continuation of one of the journals of the said roller, or a separate part therefrom, as is generally the case.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'The catch g, bent right-angularly, and attached to the hinged frame a b, in combination with the plate j, having lugs t" and recess 0, whereby both vertical and lateral displacement of the roller-frame is prevented, sub stantially as described.
