y Application med November s, 195er.l serai No.' 232,057. l i I The resent invention relates to an attachment` or a railroad coupler and has for its prime object to rovide means for opening the knuckle and olding the knuckle of the coupler open until they coupling is desired to be made.

Other very important'objectsof the invention reside in the provision of an attachment of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong and durable,v inexthoroughly eflicient and reliable in operation, and otherwise well adapted 'to the` purpose for which it is designed.

With the above and numerous other objects in view as tion proceeds, the invention resides in certain nove features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully describedand claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 10 denotes a conventional coupler including the knuckle 11 and knuckle pin 12. The numeral 1 denotes a plate disposed on one side of the coupler 10 by means of the knuckle pin 12 projecting through an opening therein. This plate at its rear lower corner is provided with an apertured ear 13in which is disposed an eye bolt 2. The upper front corner of the plate 1 is provided with a bearing 14v in which is rotatable a shaft 15 formed integrally on one end of an arm 4 to project laterally therefrom. This shaft 15 has its squared as at 16 to be received in a square a reduced apertured end 19 to be received between apertured ears 20 of a head 21 on a Stem 22 and a pivot pin k23 extends through will appear as the descripend portion This crank 18 hasv theopenings of the end 19 and the ears 20 vfor hingedly connecting the crank with the` stem 22. This stem 22 extends through the eye `of the eye bolt 2 and has a spring 3 coiled 55` thereabout impinging against the eye bolt 2 and against thefheacl 21. It will be seen that the spring urges the arm 4 to swing thereby tending to open or maintain inan. open position the knuckle 11.

to release the knuckle, it throws the arm 4 out-of lock and it automatically kicks open the knuckleand locks it open until the impact of another car forces the coupling, the knuckle can be closed by hand with little effort. Thus the parts do not interfere with the operation of the conventional coupler structure. l

' It is thought that the tion and advantages of the invention will now be quite apparent without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by. way'of example since in 80 y actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the state-` ment of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, tion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention ,as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.

' Having thus described my invention, what 90 I claim as new is:

1.
