Description
S. E. URBANIAK.
END GATE SECURING MEANS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-2, I920.
97E. z l a V W IIQ E INVENTOR STANLEY E.URBANIAK BY HIS ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
STANLEY E. URBANIAK, OF STRANDQUIST, MINNESOTA.
END-GATE-SEGURING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed January 2, 1920. Serial No. 349,058.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY E. URBANIAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strandquist, in the county of Marshall and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate- Securing Means, of which the following is a specification.
lvly invention relates to end gates for grain tanks and wagon boxes and the object is to provide a simple, efficient and easily operated gate of such construction that it can be easily opened when desired and will not under any circumstances become accidentally opened because of pressure from within or from vibration or jarring of the wagon. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a wagon box or grain tank equipped with my improved end gate.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference nirinerals, 8 designates the rear end of a wagon box in which is hingedly mounted with hinges 4t an end gate 5, all of well known construction. To the swinging end of the gate 5 is bolted with bolts 6 a plate 7 which extends over and overlaps upon the end of the wagon box. Fulcrumed near its middle and pivotally secured to said plate 7 is a bent lever 8 having at one end a handle 9 and provided at its other end with a suitably enlarged portion 10 Integral with and extending down from said enlarged portion 10 is a curved extension 11 adapted to slidably engage an eye bolt or other perforated projection 12. A spring 18 positioned about said extension 11 tends to push the enlarged end of the lever arm 10 upward, but a cotter pin or other suitable stop 14: prevents the extension 11 from slipping completely through the eyebolt 12. The handle end of the lever 8 is also provided with a curved downward extension or finger 15 adapted to engage an eye bolt 16 which is secured in the end 3 of the wagon box, and which is adapted to slip through a suitable slot 17 in the said overlapped end of the plate 7 when the end gate is closed.
The end gate as shown in the drawing is in the locked position. hen it is desired to open the same it is only necessary to raise the handle 9 until the finger 15 is lifted out of the eyebolt 16. The plate 7 will then be free to swing out with the gate 5. The spring 13 will prevent the accidental lifting of the lever and unlocking of the gate.
:iavin'g now fully shown and described in y invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In combination with an end gate hingedly secured to a box, of a hasp secured to said end gate and adapted to be engaged by a perforated projection on said box, a lever pivotally mounted near its middle upon said gate and having a downwardly extending finger at one end thereof adapted to engage said perforated projection when said gate is closed, a curved extension integral with the opposite end of said lever, said extension being adapted to slidably engage a fixed perforated stud, means for limiting the sliding movement of said extension in said stud, a spring positioned about said extension and coacting against the adjacent lever end, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
STANLEY E. URBANIAK.
