This invention relates to valve spring lifters or compre'gsors for use in compressing or lifting the lower ends of the valve springs as arranged about the valve-stems of poppet valve type internal combustion engines to permit the retaining pin or liey to be easily removed or reinserted in rei'novingl or replacing the valves and their stems incident to the grinding of the valves or their removal or replacement or adjustment for any reason, and is primarily intended for use with verystrong springs ofthis nature used on large engines such as employed in large motor trucks, busses, tractors and the like.
The primary objects of this invention are to provide a very rugged tool with great leverage so as to be very easily operated,-not withstanding the great strength of the spring, to compress the latter; to provide C-shape tool so reinforced as to overcome the tendency to spread or elongate under pressure of the spring; to provide a convenient handle forA positioning the tool in close association With an operating handle to facilitate in general the manipulation of the tool; to provideV in i a tool an offset lever construction to l 'd engine parts; to so locate said positioning handle and' operating handle lever as te facilitate the use of the tool by increasing the range of vision about both the foot and the j aw whereby said tool may be easily and quickly operated by a. single operator or mechanic, wit-hout aid, to lift or compress such valve springs, in operativeposition about the valve stems of such large engines; to provide a convenient lever lock; to provide in such a tool an 'adjustable bearing and supporting member or foot for bearingagainst the top of the valve as the frameV with its adjustable liaw moves in accordance. with the levers; to combine in such a tool means for compressing a free valve spring as a. preliminary to its insertion into operative position about avalve stem, and to provide special details in the latter means, all of which objects, among others, are accomplished by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more particularly set forth, described and claimed.
In this application I show and describe only the present preferred embodiment of my invention, simply by way of illustration of the practice of my invention as by law required. However, I recognize that my invention is capable of other and different embodiments, and that the various details therea valve spring and'valve of an engine, all indicated in dotted line, the device being operatively positioned and open;

In operation, as the-lever 2l is swung on its pivot 22 toward handle 6, the upper walls of the notches 30 will engage with the rear wall of the slot in the plate 26, which will thereby be depressed against the action of the spring 3l, thus permitting the tongue 23 to slide on` through the plate 2G and shank 7, but on the reverse movement of the tongue 28 the rear wall of the slot in the plate 26 willbe in engagenient with the lower face of one of the notches 30, `so that the compressed valvespring will act to cause a tighter grip of the i' late 26 on the tongue 28.
