1Q designates the outer or free `end portion of a pile wire, and 13 a flat-sided blade, pref-V erably of the sheet steel wafer type. The
holder fixed to the body 12 is formed from a single blank of thin sheet metal, and includes opposed jaws 14 and 15, connected by a neck 16 to form a blade-receiving channeh The jaws yieldingly' grasp the sides of the blade and are adapted to be Sprung apart at their forward ends, t0 permit the insertion and removal of the blade.
The outer end of the jaw 14 has a spoon orhead 17, which is extended beyond the outer end of the jawl, and bears on a side of the outer end portion of the blade. The blade projects forwardfrom the outer end of the jaw 15, so that the outer end portion of its outer side is unsupported, and it may be laterally displaced as shown by dotted lines in Figures 8 and 9, from the position shown by full lines in which it is normally held.
1he channel formed by the jaws and neck contains a longitudinal back abutment on which the back of the blade 1S bears,'to locate the cuttingV edge 13a in an operative position Y above the holder. Said back abutment may be the neck, when the pile wire 12 is rela` tively narrow. When said wire is wider than the minimum width, the back abutment is' formed by a series of members 19, integral with a jaw of the holder and projecting laterally into the channel. `Said members lare preferably the sides of oblong indentations or bosses, pressed inwardly from one of the jaws, in this instance, the jaw 15, although they may be pressed from either or each of the jaws. The object of the members 19 is to bring the cutting edge of the blade at the proper level or height. A.
rlfhe inner end of the channel formed by the jaws, and the neck 16, receives the outer end of the pile wire 12, and is suitably secured (ill nfl
thereto, the neck bearing on the lower edge A of the wire. The members 19 extend par allel with the neck, and may be located at any height'above the neck required to locate the cutting edge 13a of the blade above the jaws. Owing' to the fact that the members 19 are integral parts of the holder, they provide a blade back abutment which is inseparable from the holder, and does not involve the employment of a'separate part inserted in the channel. W' hen the. blade back abutment is formed by-the members 19,1 provide vthe spoon 17 with -a supplemental blade back abut ment 20, formed by aboss integral with the spoon, and in alinement with the members 19, so that it supports the projecting forward end portion of the. blade back, as shown by Figures 4 and 10; Y f y `I provide the spoon 17 with abutment means bearing on the blade at its forward end portion, to confine the blade backagainst forward and upward movement from its predetermined position on the back abutment. In Figures 1 and 4 I show said abutment means. embodied ina boss 21, arranged t0 ion tlll
bear on the transverse edge 13", forming the outer end ot' the blade, said edge being at right angles with the back edge, and a boss 22, arranged to bear on the outer extremity ot the cutting edge l'll. The bosses 20, 2l and are integral parts of the spoon and present bearing edges projecting from the inner side thereof, slightly more than the thickness ot the blade, so that the blade can be readily displaced outwardly, at its outer end. and thus disengaged from the bosses. The boss Ll constitutes an end stop, and the boss 22 a holding-down stop.
ln Figure l() l show the spoon provided with an abutment l'or the abm'e-described purposes, and composed ot a single boss 2?, whose bearing edge is inclined and located in position to bear 0n the transverse edge 13", forming the outer end ot' the blade, said edge being inclined, so that the boss overhangs it, and pcrl'ornis the dual function oil an end stop and a holding-down stop.
I provide the inner end portion ot' the holder with a boss ill, preterabi), formed like the bosses Q1 and and pressed inwardly from one ot' the jaws into the channel, in position to overhang an inner end portion oi the blade, and prevent inward endwise displacement ol the blade, and upward displacement ot its inner end portion. The transverse edge 13d 'forming the inner end ot' the blade, is pre'lerably inclined, so that the boss 2l overhangs said edge and performs the dual t'unction ol an end stop and a holdingdown stop. The blade may be positively locked to the holder, to prevent the possibility ot its accidental disengagement trom the confining means above described. This may be accon'iplished as shown by Figures l, 2, lO and ll, by providing the aws with orifices QG, and the blade with an orifice 27, said orifrees registering with cach other as shown by Figure ll, when the blade is in its operative position, and inserting and securingT a plug 28 in the orilices. The plug may be a` short stud soldered within the orilices, or it may be 'formed within the oritices by inserting a filling of melted solder in the oriliees, and allowing it to solidify therein by cooling. The plug may be ejected by any suitable means, when the blade is to be removed. The plug is secured wholly within the orifices, so that its ends mayv be tlush with the outer sides ot the aws, as shown by Figure 1l. The thickness oi the structure is therefore not in- .creased by the plug.

Said abutment members may be formed by a single operation on the blank from which the holder is formed, and do not involve the addition of' a part or parts to said blank, so that the holder and the abutment members may be formed in a single piece.

l. A pile wire including a body portion, a {iat-sided blade, a blade-holder lixcd to the body portion and comprising opposed jaws connected by a neck to form a channel and yieldingly grasping the sides of the blade, the channel containing a longitudinal back abutment supporting the blade back and operatively locating the cutting edge above the holder, the jaws and blade being provided with orifices arranged to register with cach other when the blade back is in its operative position on the back abutment, and a plug inserted in said orifices, and secured therein, so that its ends are Hush with the outer sides of the jaws.
2. A pile wire which includes a bodypor-V tion, a flat-sided blade, whose margin includes a back portion,outer and inner end portionsand la cutting edge, and a sheetmetal blade-holder fixed to the body portion and including opposed blade-grasping jaws connected by a neck to form a blade-receiving channel, one of said jaws and the blade being laterally displaceable, and a spoon formed on the outer end of one of the jaws and bearing on one side of the blade, the holder being characterized by a group of spaced apart indentations integral therewith and constituting abutment members ar ranged to bear on different portions of the blade margin and prevent endwise and edgewise displacement of the blade in any direction, when the blade is not laterally displaced, said members including a row of bladey back-supporting members Vformed on one of the jaws and projecting into the channel above the neck, to bear onthe back portion of the blade margin, and a member formed on the spoon in alinement with the said row and bearing on the back portion of the blade margin, at the forward end of the blade.
5. A pile wire which includes a body portion, a flat-sided blade whose margin includes a back portion, oppositely inclined j outer and inner end portions, and a cutting edge, and a sheet-metal blade-holder xed to the body portion and including opposed blade-grasping jaws connected by a neck to form a blade-receiving channel, one of said jaws and the blade being laterally displace-` able,and a spoon formed on the outer end of one of the jaws and bearing on one side of the blade, the holder `being characterized by a group of spaced apart indentations integral Y therewith and constituting abutment members arranged to bear on different portions of the blade margin and prevent endwise and edgewise displacement of the blade in any direction, when the blade is not laterally displaced, said members including a holdingdown member formed on one of the aws and bearing on the inclined inner end portion of the blade margin, and a. holding-down member formed on the spoon and bearing on the inclined outer end portion of said margin.
6. A pile wire which includes a body portion, a latsidedblade whose margin includes a back portion, outer and inner end portions, and a cutting edge, and a blade-holder iXed to the body portion, and including opposed blade-grasping jaws connected by a neck to form a blade-receiving channel, and abutments adapted to bear on the margin of the blade and confine it against endwise and edgewise` displacement in any direction, said abutments including a row of blade-back abutments formed on one of the jaws and projecting into the slot, to support the blade back above the neck.
7. A pile wire as specified by claim 6, the j holder including also a spoon projecting from the outer end of one of the jaws, and having a blade-back abutment projecting therefrom in alinement with the abutments on said jaw, to bear on the outer end of the back.
8. A pile wire as specied by claim 6, the holder being made of a single piece of sheet metal, and the several abutments being integral parts of the holder and grouped around the blade margin, so that they collectively oppose edgewise and endwise displacement of the blade in any direction.
