This invention relates to improvements `in thread cutters for weft replenishing looms more particularly, though not necessarily, of the `multi-color type, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a cutter so Controlled as to operate prior to transfer.
In weft replenishing mechanisms there 1s usually provided a transferrer arm which acts on the transferring beat of the loom to insert a fresh bobbin in the depleted shuttle. It is desirable to cut the filling extending from the selvage to the exhausted bobbin prior to the time of transfer so that the trailing end may be drawn out of the shuttle box. It is an important object of my present mvention to accomplish this result by employing a connection between the transferrer arm and the cutting mechanism whereby the eutter is held against cutting action so long as the transferrer arm is raised but is released to cut during the first part of the downward motion of the transferrer arm and before transfer is completed Itis a further object of my present inven tion to provide a cutter wherein the energy necessary to open the same is stored in a resilient device priorto the time of transfer and released bythe transferrer arm at the rst part of the downward strokeof the latter, thetransferrer arm acting as a trigger to release the cutter.
Itis a more particular object of my invention to provide controlling mechanism for the cutter whereby the time at which the cutter is released to sever the thread may be varied with respect to the vertical position of the transferrer arm so that cutting may be accomplished either at the start of the trans` ferring stroke or a short time thereafter, depending upon the result desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a cutter on a shuttle placer and arrange for releasing the cutter and operating the placer by the transferrer arm.
Vith these and other objects which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention relates to the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth, and
more particularly pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, wherein a convenient embodiment of my invention is set forth.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that-I have provided a loom frame 1() on which is mounted a weft replenishing mechanism 11 of the multi-colei' type. A top shaft 12 oscillates in bearing 13 prior to indication for transfer and has secured thereto an arm 14 connected to a link 15 operatively connected to a second link 16. Said links are connected yieldingly by a compression spring 1'? and rod 18, the upper end of the latter being secured to the bottom of link 15. A
compression spring bears against the upper part of the second link 16 so that upward movement of lilik 15 tends to raise link 16, although the latter may remain at rest if an obstruction lies in the path of any part operatively connected thereto.
The lower end of link 16 is pivoted to a lever 19 which in turn is pivoted at 2O on a forked mounting 21 having a stud 22 which extends through hub 23 of a stand 24 bolted to the frame 11. 1
The lower leg 25 of the lever 19yis slotted at 26 to receive a roll 27 mounted on transferrer arm 28. The roll and slot may or may not be used, but when used, said slot will be in the form shown in Fig. 7 to cooperate with the roll to move the lever 19 toward the shuttle on transferring beats when the transferrer arm is moving downwardly, the movement toward the shuttle occurring at Vof an arm 36 also piveted on the stud Said? arm is provided with. a pin 37 to which is pivoted the lower nd of a rod head 38. A torsionlactuating spring 39 has one end thereof anchored in the arm 36 and the other end held'by a nut 40 threaded on'the stud 32 and held in place by a check nut 41. The normal tendency of the actuating spring 39 is to held the cutter jaw closed in the pesi tion shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The relatively stationary cutter blade 42 is held to the unit 31 partly by a shoulder 43 of the stud 3Q andYV partly by a screw 44. A screw 45 secured into the nnitl acts to limit upward movement of the movable -cntter blade 33 and forms one support for a clamp member46, the other support being the stud 32. The cutter blade 33 lies between said stationary cutter bla-de 42 and clamp 46', the latter, if desired, being made of fibre.

My present improvement relates more particularly to the means for controlling the cutter and the time of the operation thereof, and in carrying ont my invention I provide a lever 5() pivoted at 51 to the frame 11 and Vthrough ka slot 53 inthe plate and is secured in the vertical arm 54. The lower end of plate 56 islprovided with a downwardly openinrr slet 59 which is normally occupied by pin G0 secured to the transferrer arm and movingtherewith. As a matter of convenience the plate 5G and arm 54 are located ben l tween the roll 27 and the transferrer arm 28 when the roll is used. Y
In theloperation of my improvement when the linl 15 is raised lever 19 will rock around stud 2O to move the thread cutting and rece clamping unit 31 to the position shown in Fig. 2. Duringl this movement the transferrer arm is in its raised position and pin @O is therefore located in the slot 59. For this reason the upper end of rod 53 is held againstdownward movement and because of the centers of the lever 19, sind 32, pin 37 and the upper end of said rod 53, the movable cutter 33 will move relatively to the fixed blade so as to open, as indicated in Fig. 2. inasmuch as thc rod 53 can not move downwardly torsion spring 3S) will be given a` slight twist as the cutters move to open position, this twist tending to close thc cutters.

In this way assurance is given that the cutter will operate at the beginning of the downward stroke of the tizinsferrer arm before the fresh bobbin has started to enter the depleted shuttle.
'lhe closing of the cutter is accomplished by a movement of the lever 5() to the position shown in Fig. 3, where it will be noted that the slot or notch 59 is ont of registry with the pin (i0. As the transferrer moves downwardly the lay will move forwardly and the back G1 of the box will engage the unit 31 to move the saine forward to the position shown in Fig. 1. This last operation is co1npleted while thc transferrcr arm is down so that the lever 50 and therefore notch 5G will be returned to normal position while the pin e() is in its lowest position. As the lay recedes and the transferrer arm rises the pin (3() will enter the slot 59 and the parts will be restored to position shown in Fig. 1.

Having `thus described my invention, it will be apparent that changes and modifications maybe made therein by those skilled in the art without departing `from the spirit and scope ofthe invention, and I do not wish to be'limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is l. locking means holding the cutter open against the action of the actuating means when said cutter is in cutting position, and inter-con nections between the transferrer mechanism and the locking means to release the actuating means during the first part of the opera tion of the transferrer mechanism on a transferring beat of the loom, whereby the actuating means will operate the cutter prior to the completion of the transferring movement of the transf'errer mechanism.

In a weft replenishingl loom, a transferrer arm, a thread cutting and clamping unit normally in non-cutting position, the cutter and clamp being normally closed. when in non-cutting` position, means to move the unit toward cutting position prior to transfer means to open the cutter and ,clamp as the unit moves toward cutting` position, a resilient member tending normally to close the cutter and clamp, and devices operatively connected to an d controlled by the transferrer arm holding said resilient device against action while the t-ransferrer is at rest and releasing said resilient device during the downward stroke of the transferrer arm, whereby said resilient device will close the cutter and clamp.
4. In a weftrep'lenishing loom, atrans-` ferrer arm, a thread cutting and clamping unit normally inV non-cutting position with the cutter and clamp closed, a resilient device connected with the cutter and clamp and tending normally to move the same to closed position, means operative prior to transfer to move the unit to cutting position, means effective as the unit moves toward cutting position to open the cutter and clamp against the action of the resilient device, mechanism operatively connecting the resilient device and the transferrer arm and tending to hold the resilient device inactive while the transferrer arm is at rest', said transferrer arm at the `beginning of its downward stroke becoming disconnected from the mechanism, whereby thelatter is released and the resilient deviceis effective to close the cutter and clamp. i
5. In a weft replenishing loom, a transferrer arm, iathread cutting and clamping unitnormally innon-cutting position with the cutter and clamp closed, a resilient. device tending normally to close the cutter and clamp, movable mechanisn'i operatively connected to the resilient device and normally held against motion by engagement with the transferrer arm when the latter is at rest to hold the resilient device against action, and means to move the unit to cutting position and to open the cutter and clamp, said transferrer arm at the beginning of its downward stroke on a transferring beat of the loom becoming disengaged from the mechanism so that. the latter is movable, whereby the resilient device will close the cutter and clamp before the completion of the transferring movement of the transferrer arm.

In a weft replenishing loom, a transferrer arm, a thread cutting and clamping unit normally in non-cutting position with the cutter and clamp closed, a resilient device ope atively connected to the cutter and clamp and tending normally to move the same toward closed position, a lever movable about a liXed center and operatively con- 'nected to the resilient device, means defining a connection between the transferrer arm and the lever to prevent movement of the latter' when the transferrer arm is at rest and in raised position, and means acting prior to transfer' to move said unit to cutting position and to open the cutter and clamp, the transferrer arm moving out of controlling relation with respect to the lever during the first part of the transferring stroke, thereby reeasing the resilient device so that the same is effective to close the cutter and clamp.
