SELECTING MECHANISM FOR CALCULATING MACHINES.

This invention relates to a selecting mechanism for calculatin machines of that type inwhich selecting e ements are set b keys and subsequently operated to throw the key 5. selected valuesinto denominational members or index wheels.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character with simple and eflicient selecting mechanism, occupyin a .10 minimum of lateral. space to permit c ose spacing of the index wheels and capable of being set' without necessitating conjoint movement of a plurality of setting members. A subordinate object is to arrange the setting members so that they will normally occupy positions at one side only of the index wheel with which they are associated and equipped with complements of teeth so arranged that any value from 1 to 9 may be ebtained by the setting of a single member upon the depression of a single key. Subordinate objects will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of an index wheel and its associated selectors.

with each of which there is associated a gear 3. Rotatable with two selector shafts 4 and 4c 5, and slidable endwise thereof,'are selectin members, or selectors 6 and 7 of cylindrica form, equipped with teeth 8.
The teeth 8 of the selectors are spaced in accordance with the spacing of the teeth of the gear 3 so that when a tooth or teeth of either selector is located in the plane of the gear, the rotation of the selector shafts will rotate the index wheel, a number of merements corresponding to the selected value. The teeth 8 of 3,.so that the first increment of movement to the left or in the'direction of the gear w ll bring one tooth into 0 erative pos1t1on,wh1le each successive step 0 movement of the selecthe selector 6 are four in numher and are graduated, as shown 1n Figure tor in the same direction will bring another tooth into operative position.
The other selector is equipped with nine teeth, so arranged that five of them come into action on a single step of movement of the selector, while an additional tooth comes into operative pos1t1on upon each succeeding step or movement. Thus, it will be seen that the selector 6 is settable in any one of four positions to secure the values 1 to 4, while the selector 7 issettable in five positions to select the values 5 to 9.
The specific means for moving the selectors 6 and 7 .1s no part of my present invention. Var1ous key operated mechanism for shiftmg selectors step by step to different set posi-- tions are well known in the art.
However, it may be stated that the selectmg mechanism herein claimed is designed for use in a well known type of calculating machine such, for instance, as that disclosed in Reissue Patent #155,841 to Baldwin, and it i is contemplated to shift the selectors by mechanism operated from the keys as in Baldwin, except that, of course, obvious variations of Baldwins cam elements will be necessary to effect the described movements.
It is deemed suflicient for the purpose of this disclosure, to show, in Figure 4, a pair of bell crank shifting levers 9 and 10, arranged to shift the selectors 6 and 7 of one denomination, and shown diagrammatically as connected to the keys of onerow or bank. That is to say, the selector 6 isconnected to the first four eys because it selects the values 1 to 4, -while'the selector 7 is connected to the last five-keys because it selects the values 5 to 9.
The means whereby a crank or motor 11 serves to rotate the shafts 4 and 5 is not material, but may include a driving gear 12, operated by the crank and meshing with a pair of gears 13 and 14 on the shafts 4 and 5.
It is thought that from the foregoing the construction, operation and advantages of my selecting mechanism will be clearly understood. but I reserve the right to efiect such modifications thereof as may fall within the scope of the protect-ion prayed.
What I claim is 1. In a calculating machine, the combination with a denominational member, of a plurality of selectors adapted to operate said 2. The combination with a denominational member, of a gear associated therewith, a plurality of independently rotatable selectors normally mounted at one side of the plane of the gear and having teeth brought into the operative plane of said gear by the movement of the selectors in the same direction transverse to the gear, and means for rotating the selectors to operate the denominational member.
7 The combination with a shaft, of a denominational member mounted thereon, a gear associated with a denominational member, a plurality of shafts parallel with each member, of selectors normally located at one side thereof, means including keys for moving the selectors to different set positions, and means for individually rotating the selectors to operate the denominational member.
9. The combination with a denominational I member, of a plurality of selectors movable in the same direction to different set positions, separate ,keys for-setting said selectors and operating means common to both selectors to individually rotate the same.
10. The combination with a denominational member, of a plurality of rotary toothed selectors mounted at the same side of the denominational member on different shafts, separate keys for moving each of the selectors toward the denominational member to different set positions, and means common to both selectors for rotating the same.
11. The combination with a denominational member and a gear of two rotary selectors mounted on different axes and normally located at the same side of the gear, one of said selectors having teeth of graduated lengths, and the other of said selectors having teeth of graduated lengths and also a plurality of teeth terminating in the same plane, means for shifting the said selectors laterally to different set positions, and means for rotating the selectors.
