'UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ica CALCULATINGl MACHINE Edward C. Walter, Orange, N. J., assigner to Monroe Calculating Machine Company, Orange, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application May 2s, 1940, serial No. 337,702
2 Claims. (Cl. 23S-138) The invention relates'to calculating machines, notches in ywhich are located two pivotal carry and particularly to tens carry mechanism thereelements I5, one of said elements being adjustable for, an object of the invention being to provide to transmit the carry to the next higher order for the use of the same rotary carry unit in manumeral wheel in additive operations and the chines such as the Monroe having ten banks and other in subtractive operations, during rotation those having thirteen banks of denominational of said unit. The additive and subtractive carry keys. elements are angularly oiset from one another to The invention consists in the novel'construcform the aforesaid opposed spiral series in the tion and combinations of Darts as hereinafter well known manner. set forth in the claims. l0 Each pair of carry elements I5 is secured to the In the accompanying drawing, related sleeve I4 by a segmental clip spring I8 Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, taken seated in a channel of the sleeve and in notches through the carry mechanism and associated of the element. S. patent to Britten, No. 1,474, settable device l set in depressed position, one 230, dated November 13, 1923, wherein the proarm of said element Will be depressed by said gressiively offset carry teeth or elements are arbeveled or cam surface and the other arm will be ranged in two opposed spiral series, each series raised into engagement between the teeth of the being continued beyond a carry element common intermediate gear 4 related to the next higher to both series, this arrangement being also shown order numeral wheel. Said element is heid in in the disclosure of the U. S. patent to Baldwin, such engaging position and will impart one step No. 706,375, dated August 5, 1902. The U. In the drawing, the numeral I designates a nu- Certain oi' said sleeves Il .are provided each meral Wheel, of which a sexies is provided, with a double beveled restoring tooth and cermountedY on shaft 2, and having each fast thereto tain others of said sleeves are provided each with a pinion 3, meshing with an intermediate gear two double beveled restoring teeth 20 adapted for 4, which gear is operable by the related diferenengagement respectively with a pin 2i of theretial actuator 22 and the tens carry mechanism. lated settable device 'i during rotation of said Each wheel 3 is provided with a circumferential 40 unit to cam said device into'rnormal raised posilateral projection 5, lying in the plane of a tooth tion. I

'I'here is provided whereas the restoring' teeth A2li for the devices 1 a settable device 'l for each active numeral wheel 50 related to the carry elements I5 forming the diof the machine. verging portions of the opposed spirals and lo- Upon the drive shaft I3 is provided a rotary cated opposite the left hand portion of the keycarry unit having mounted for rotation thereboard are disposed in two lines on the outer sides with a series of circumierentially channeled of said carry elements, the reason for this being sleeves i4, each provided with two spaced radial 5f that the restoring teeth must act, in either direction of rotation of said unit, after the carry has been eiected in the higher order wheel; that is to say the restoring teeth for said devices must follow the carry elements I during rotation thereof with said unit.
In a machine having ten banks of denominational keys, the carry elements I5 of the converging spirals are relied upon to transmit the carry from the lower to the higher order numeral wheels according to values set in said banks of denpminational keys, and the restoring teeth for the related settable devices 1 will always follow the carry elements during rotation therewith with said unit and the carry will be properly eiIected.
In a machine having thirteen banks of denominational keys however, if the carry element I5 common to the converging and diverging portions of the opposed spirals and the next two adjacent elements of the diverging portions of said spirals were relied upon to transmit the carry from the lower to the higher order numeral wheels according to values set in the last three banks of keys to the left of the keyboard, the carry would not be eiected, because the restoring teeth 20 for the settable devices 1 related to said common element and next two adjacent elements would not follow but would precede said carry elements during rotation of said unit in either direction, and a settable device 1 depressed by the projection of a lower order wheel would be restored to normal raised position by the related tooth 20 before actuation of the related carry element and of the higher order wheel.
In order to correct this, there are provided, upon the outer sides of the diverging portions of the opposed spirals of carry elements I5, two opposed secondary series of three carry elements IB' each, located circumferentially opposite said common element and next two adjacent elements of the diverging portions of said spirals and also mounted for rotation with said unit. Said secondary series of three carry elements I5' each are progressively oiIset from one another to form with said common element I5 and next two adjacent elements two short converging series. Between each of these ltwo short converging series the restoring teeth 20 for the settable devices 1 related to said common element and next two adjacent elements are arranged in a single line and will respectively follow either member of either short converging series during movement thereof with said unit in either direction.
Upon the occurrence of a tens carry following the setting of 'a value in any one of the last three banks of denominational keys to the left of a thirteen key bank machine and the condition of the numeral wheels I3 calling for transmission oi' the carry through the fourteenth carry element Il to the left in either of the diverging portions of the opposed spirals, it is necessary to provide a special restoring tooth 20" to restore the settable member 1 related to either of said -fourteenth carry elements before the other fourteenth carry element cornes into active position. The said fourteenth carry elements to the lei't are those carry elements of the diverging portions of said spirals located next to the left beyond the secondary series of carry elements. The restoring tooth 20" is located between these fourteenth carry elements and is also mounted for rotation with the rotary carry unit.
In the use of the same rotary carry unit for both ten key bank and thirteen key bank machines, the carry elements I5' of the secondary series are omitted in radial notches provided in the related sleeves I4 of a ten key bank machine, and are installed in said notches for a thirteen key bank machine.
I claim:
1. A calculating machine, having diierentiai actuators, numeral wheels, intermediate gears related to said wheels and to said actuators, and tens carrying mechanism including devices individually settable by the related lower order numeral wheel, and a rotary unit having mounted for rotation therewith two opposed primary spiral series of elements, each series being continued beyond an element common to both series to form converging and diverging spiral portions and the elements of one or the other series according to the direction of rotation of said unit being respectively engageable with the related settable device and thereby adjustable to engage the gear related to the higher order numeral wheel, and restoring means for said settable devices; in cornbination with other differential actuators located opposite said common element and adjacent elements of the diverging portions of said spirals, and intermediate gears and settable devices related thereto, said rotary unit having mounted for rotation therewith two opposed secondary series of elements, each series being located circumierentially opposite said common element and adjacent elements and forming therewith two short converging series, the restoring means for the settable devices related to said common element and adjacent elements being located between each of said two short converging series and serving also to restore the settable devices related to the members of said secondary series.
2. A calculating machine, having differential actuators, numeral wheels, intermediate gears related to said wheels and to said actuators, and tens carry mechanism including devices individually settable by the related lower order numeral wheel, and a rotary unit having mounted for rotation therewith two opposed primary series of elements, each spiral series being continued beyond an element common to both sc ries to form converging and diverging spiral portions and the elements of one or the other series according to the direction of rotation of said unit being respectively engageable with the related settable device and thereby adjustable to engage the gear related to the higher order numeral wheel, and restoring means for said settable devices; in combination with other differential actuators located opposite said common element and adjacent elements of the diverging portions of said spirals, and intermediate gears and settable devices related thereto, said rotary unit having mounted for rotation therewith two opposed secondary series of elements, each'series being located circumferentially opposite said common element and adjacent elements and forming therewith two short converging series,.
and special restoring means for the settable devices related to those elements of said diverging spirals located next to the left beyond said secondary series, the restoring means for the settable devices related to said common element and adjacent elements being located between each of said two short converging series and serving also to restore the settable devices related to the members of said secondary series,
