Description
i UTTE STATES PATENT FFT@ GEO. F. TRESGOT, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
i RIGGING vEssELs.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,890, dated March 24, 18.57.
To all wh-m t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. TREsooT, of Charleston, in the State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Rigging Vessels andhfor a Better Security of the Masts andlSails; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my improvement consists in the lengthening out ot" lower mast No. l above the hounds No. 8 so as to allow a storm sail and yard No. G to be hung in a similar manner to the lower yard No. 7 under the top No. and in reducing the topmast No. 2 in reverse proportion to increase of lower mast and by a division of the lower rigging or shrouds Nos. 3 and 4 to given points Nos. 8 and 9 or hounds of lower mast. The top No. l5 to be reduced in size suitable proportions to t-he mast.
I do not claim the dividing the top sail, as in Forbs or Hows rig, so as to form a storm sail, but
I claim A separate and distinct sail and yard which I Call a storm yard and sail on the lower mast so that in event of a ship losing her top mast or head of lower mast, would still have her storm sails to work of a lee shore and by the division of the shrouds the masts are better secured though longer and no more weight aloft than usual.
GEORGE F. TRESCOT. IVtnesses GEO. H. WALTER, EDWARD A. WEST.
