SAIL FOR FORE-AND-AFT-RIGGED VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,157, dated May 24, 18159.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. WASHINGTON STEWART, of Cambridge, in the county of Dorchester and State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in the Foresail of Vessels, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the usual' manner of making, modifying, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, of which the figure is a side view of the vessel with the improved sail.
My invention consists in combining with the fore sail of sailing vessels a clue sail in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
a is the ordinary fore sail, and b the clue sail.
c is the boom of the foresail, d one of the 'foresheets y The clue'sail has no boom and is attached to the foresail by any of the usual modes of splicing sails.
c e are the sheets of the clue sail.
In shifting tacks or going about, the fore sail is managed as usual and the sheet of clue sail to Windward, is let go at the same time with the fore sheet, and as the vessel goes about, the oluesail is drawn around the mainmast and the sheet made fast on the other side, and in sailing close as represented in the drawing, a portion of the clue sail is drawn somewhat aft of the mainmast.
The foresail a is shown as usually constructed and it will be seen that between the leech of the foresail and the mainmast a great deal of wind is lost and as the foresail cannot be enlarged by elongating either the gafl' Aor the boom I have contrived this triangular cluesail, to be combined and used with the foresail as shown above and the result of the improvement is a considerable gain in speed with a slight eXtra expense and very little additional trouble, asthe same hand that tends the fore sheets can take care of the cluesheets. I do not claim enlarging sails by the addition of bonnets or splicesA as these have been before known, but I confine my claim to the peculiar improvement of foresails,
which is fully set forth'above; therefore What I claim as my improvement in foresails is- The clue sail b of the form specified united to the after leech of the fore sail and managed by sheets 6,66 as herein set forth.
