Description
UNITED STATES PATENT UEEICE.
FREDERIC HOWES, OF YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXTRA YARD TO TOPSAILS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,125, dated J une 20, 1854:.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERIC Howns, of Yarmouth, in the county of Barnstable, the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved mode of applying and supporting a second or eXtra topsail-yard by means of a truss to the cap of the lower masthead, and also a crane or brace to the heel of the topmast, top, or trestletrees, to the lower mast; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in applying an eXtra yard to any topsail, and
supporting it upon the cap of the lower mast head by a truss and crane, as hereinafter.
described, so that the upper* topsail yard may be lowered down in close proximity to the said eXtra yard. By `this improvement the topsailis dividedinto two parts and may be reefed orl taken in with one third the number of men necessary to secure the same result in the old plan. When, as by the old plan, the yards are supported `by a chain att-ached to thetopmast abovesuch yard the upper topsail yardgcannot be lowered below the pointof attachment of such chain to the topmast, and of course the sail will be bellied out by the wind and require considerable tackle and a large number of men to take it in, but by my improvements the upper yard may be lowered down to the new yard, and the upper half of the topsail, as divided, drops behind the lower half of the sail, and after it is taken in or furled the lower half is clued in from the deck by the usual tackle and in the ordinary way.
The mode of applying and sustaining my new or eXtra yard is shown in elevation and in detail in the figures of the accompanying plate of drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my yard in any of the known forms supported by a truss marked A in the accompanying drawing, attached to the cap marked B, connected to the after part of the yard by iron bands (i, c, 0n the forward part by a brace or crane, marked D, theupper end connected to the band marked E, by a swivel head, the lower end of the brace or crane attached to the band marked F, bya pintle,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application of an eXtra yard, supported by truss, crane, or brace as herein described, or any other substantially the same, and which will produce the same eiect.
FREDERIC HOIVES. Witnesses E. E. RICE, N ATHAN` y EDsoN.
