UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHEDDING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS FOR WEAVING.
Application filed August 31, 1927, Serial No. 216,678, and in Great Britain October 12, 1926.
This invention relates to a tappet or shedding motion for looms more particularly applicable to looms for weaving heavy multiple ply fabrics.
According to the invention the tappets or cams are mounted transversely, on a shaft or drum at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the loom, each tappet ismachined from steel plate with a cam groove on both sides and the tappet levers are mounted aboveand Fig. 3 is a side elevation of tappet or cam and tappet levers.
The tappets or cams A and the tappet levers B are mounted in a frame C and disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the loom and constituting a separate unit capable of being detached from the loom Without disturbing or displacing other parts of the mechanism.
The tappet-s A are fitted on a central shaft D and drum (Z at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the loom rotating in bearings in the frame C and driven by bevel gearing e on the end of the crank shaft E and spur gears (Z (Z on counter-shafts d gearing with pinion (Z mounted in bearings in the lower frame C with suitable change wheels to vary the speed of t ie tappets to suit requirements. The tappet levers B are pivoted on studs .7) which also serve as stays or distance pieces bolted between the frames 0.
The frame C is permanently bolted to the loom gable C and to the fioor or sole plate and the tappet frameC stands upon the lower frames C being detachably bolted thereto and to the loom gable, G to provide for its removal without disturbing the lower frame or the counter-shafts and gears mounted therein.
Each intermediate tappet or cam A is maboth sides that suflice, three intermediate or chined from steel on one side to operatethe plate with cam grooves a on upper set of tappet levers B and that on the i other side to operate the lower set of ta levers B. The tappets A being machined from steel plate may be made very thin and set close together a washer or distance piece a on the central drum separating one from the other.
Each tappet lever B-B is constructed with a boss 6 at its pivoted end and at or near its centre carries a bowl or runner b to enter the cam groove a in one side of the tappet A the bowl'being preferably mounted on ball bearings. The tappet levers B, B pass between the tappets and to the free ends linksand chains are connected the chains passing over pulleys 7' along the top and bottom of the loom to connect with the healds or shafts. the
pet
' connections between the levers and chains being easily detachable.
By this construction the tappets A- and tappet leversB with their frameCand driving pinion d form a unit readily detachable and the number of tappets are reduced nearly by half so that for eight healds, five tappets central ones with two grooves each and two outside. ones, four tappet levers being pivoted towards the upper part f the tappets and four towards the lower part.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A shedding motion for looms comprising tappets, having cam grooves on both sides, mounted transversely ofthe loom, a shaft at right angles to the longitudinal axis upon which the tappets are mounted, tappet levers mounted above and below the tappet shaft, the upper levers engaging and being operated by the cam grooves on one side of the tappets, and the lower levers engaging and being operated by the cam grooves on the other side of the tappets.
2. A shedding motion for looms as in claim v 1 constructed as a separate detachable unit.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set
