The invention relates to loom shedding in a loom for producing T*.i/vilton, Brussels, or mechanism of the tappet and treadle type, and other forni of carpet. has for its object to provide an improved con- Fig. 2 is a partial plan view, and struction or arrangement of mechanism of Fig. 3 a partial sectional end elevation, 5 this type which will be especially suitable for .looking in the direction of the arrow 3, Figuse in looms for weaving heavy fabrics, such ure 2. 00 for instance 1S Cal.pet looms. Referring to the drawings, a, a represent ln the arrangement most commonly ein` the healds or harnesses each connected to reployed in such looms a series of cams are sespective upper and lower "li/adding levers cured on a sleeve mounted loosely on li and The crank shaftor the loom is repretoni shaftof the loom, and are driven by means sented at c, and the left hand end framie at e5 of a gear wheel fast on the sleeve and meshing a. tappets. This arrangement is found in pracrlhe tapnet shaft is shown at g, journalled at tice to possess certain disadvantages which it its inner end in the looni frame l and at its 70 is the object of the present invention to overouter end in the auxiliary frame c. This come or remove. shaft g is, as shown, disposed parallel with According to the invention, the tappets are the crank shaft c and in rear of same at mounted on a short shaft disposed parallel substantially the saine vertical level. Also with the crank shaft at a suitable distance in journalled between the frames d and e, in 7 rear of the line of same and at, or substantialfront of the crank shaft and also at substanly at, the same vertical level. The front ends of each adjacent pair of tapforming adj aeent pairs of tappets integral on pet levers are each connected by a chain t0 a one block or hub, they can be set or formed pulley or drum mounted to rotate freely on a to so act upon their respective levers as to shaft journalled between the loom side and cause the correct movements of a connected the auxiliary frame, the chain from one lever pair of healds, and can retain this correct setpassing around the pulley in one direction ting without possibility of displacement such 45 and that from the other lever in the opposite as might occur under heavy strain if the direction, so that as one lever is depressed by tappets were separately secured. The pair of its bowl to raise its heald, the other lever is tappets on each block are set diametrically correspondingly raised to draw down its opposite to one another. heald, The tappet levers, r, r2 r3 and r4, are dis- 50 In the accompanying drawings, posed as shown beneath the tappets and are Fig. l is a front view of shedding mechapivoted at their rear ends on a shaft s eXtendnism, according to the invention, arranged ing between the end frame d and a bracket e for operating` threev healds, which may consecured to the auxiliary frame e. trol, say, two binder warps and astutfer warp Each of the tappet levers r', r2 and r3 is connected towards its front end, by a vertical connector t', t2 or t3, adjustable as to length, to its respective upper' shedding lever, and by another connector u, u2 or M3, also adjustable as to length with the respective lower shedding lever.
rlhe front ends of the pair of tapper levers 1 and r2 are each connected by a respective chain o or @2 to a pulley or drum U3 rotatable freely on a shaft c4 extending between the frames Z and e, the chain v being carried around the pulley in one direction, and the chain o2 in the opposite direction. lt follows, therefore.l that as one of the pair of tappet levers is depressed to raise its heald, the other lever'of the pair is correspondingly raised to draw down its l eald. ln similar manner the third tappet lever r3 is connected by a chain fw to a pulley or drum 102, also loose on the shaft v4, and another chain w3 fast to the drum to2 but passing about it in the opposite direction to the chain w is connected to a tappet lever r4 adapted to be operated by the dummy tappet 02. This tappet o2 thus operates to balance the third or odd heald operated by the tappet 0 and tappet lever r3, and to draw down the said heald.
Each tappet lever is provided with a bowl e disposed in a central slot or recess e in the lever and mounted to rotate freely on a transverse pin z2 extending across the slot. rThe bowls are, as shown, of relatively large diameter, and the levers are so shaped that their they engage, eXert a direct central pressure on the tappet levers, and this permits of the use of tappets and bowls of relatively large width which, combined with the permissible use of large diameter bowls enables the parts to be of great strength and conduces to ease in working. rThe bowls may, if desired, be mounted on ball or roller bearings to minimiZe friction.
The arrangement of the mechanism described eliminates necessity for olf-setting or cranking of the tappet levers employed, and this again adds to the strength. f
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- Loom shedding mechanism comprising harnesses, upper and lower shedding levers for each harness, a crankshaft, a cam shaft positioned at the rear of and substantially on the level with said crankshaft, al speed reducing gear connection between said shafts, a plurality of external cams mounted in reverse pairs on said cam shaft, tappet levers mounted in pairs, extending transversely below said shafts and cams and each engaged and actuated in one direction only by one of said cams, connections from each tappet lever to t-he upper and lower shedding levers of one of said harnesses, and cross connections between the two tappet levers operated by a pair of adjacent reversed cams whereby one lever is raised as the other is depressed by its associated cam, each cam of each pair alternately moving two harnesses simultaneously in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my signature.
EDWARD noLLiNewonfri-i.
